How do you structure / negotiate your side project time?

I have a full-time job, am a husband and parent, need regular exercise for a back injury, and am committed to a 10 month brain training program which takes up about 5 hours per week.

So naturally, working on side hacks means careful use of time. Luckily my job is flexible, so I can move around hours as needed, but life is still extremely busy, and side projects move very, very slowly.

How do those of you that are in similar situations (1) find time in the week to work on your own projects (2) how you prioritize with limited time availability and (3) coordinate with your significant others so that they're not left to handle things like parenting, household work, and the other things that regular life throws at you?

For context, probably not as busy as you are. I have a full-time job, am a husband, have two dogs and need regular exercise. Here are my thoughts.

    1. Honestly, I seem to only find time to squeeze it in, in two places - in the morning before work, or in the evening after my wife goes to bed. Occasionally, I have squeezed in 15-30 mins on my lunch break but that is a bit unreliable.
    2. I try to break tasks down as small as possible - something that could be achieved in 15-30 mins. It makes it feel like its easier to prioritize. Though, I do want to get better about prioritizing based on tasks that will help me reach my long-term goals.
    3. I think recognizing that it's healthy to give each other alone time. When one person needs it, we're very vocal and try to give it to the other person as long as the other life responsibilities come first.

Great points Joe! 2. Is interesting. I've done something similar in the past, and hearing you mention that it's effective for you makes me want to try it again.
