Human memory has always been a joke, But with the onslaught of limited-attention content, Mental health problems and long-term COVID effects I think our memory is under greater risk than ever before.
So I decided to give special attention to strengthen my memory, By improving its retention and recall abilities. Mainly through extensive use of spaced-repetition technique by using Anki flashcard application.
But with our indie lifestyle, It's tough to maintain a rigorous review schedule which Anki demands and I found that the cards start to leech. Accumulated Anki cards are not a good motivation to review them.
So I came up with Memory Hammer, An always-on Anki review system which can let me review an Anki card as and when its due and there by not letting it getting accumulated.
Here's a demo:
It's FOSS, So give it a try if you use Anki.
What's your routine to take care of your memory?
Sugar is not ideal for the brain, exercising also helps. There are some studies coming out showing how a Keto diet improves cognition.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6286979/ is one of those.
Doesn't work for a lot of people because it's hard to cut carbs, but it's efficient if you can.
There are indeed numerous health benefits for avoiding excess sugar intake.
A few thoughts:
Where practical and applicable: 1) type instead of copy paste (this builds memory muscle), especially programming code snippets and, 2) write things down - your memory of handwritten words is tied to the movements required to make each letter.
I take fish oil every day for better brain function - interestingly, it works for me.
I used to talk to my cat; the cat died; now I talk to myself. I was worried about this, so I looked it up. It is normal and helps your brain to sort things out.
Avoiding copy-paste is indeed a great suggestion for improving memory, In-fact the act of creating flash cards by compressing the information into limited space reflects that.
Sorry about the kitty :(
Improper sugar consumption or lack of well rested nights have impacted my memory quite significantly. I tend to start looking at those aspects first, given the knowledge I have about my body.
Those are some very useful factors to keep in check. Thanks for sharing.
