How do you use Hacker News?

I've been trying to familiarize myself in reading Hacker News everyday to stay up to date on trends and topics, but its just so... overwhelming. There's so many different genres of articles so I was wondering how you all use HN. Do you read anything that catches your eye? Or do you mostly look for things related to a certain topic?
