How do you validate a new startup idea?

How do you go about validating a new startup idea?

Any tools you use?

How do you find your initial customers?

Try The Embedded Entrepereneur by Arvid Kahl. It's basically Find audience > Find Problems > Propose Solutions > Validate > Build

Most people start with an idea and then go looking for a market to validate it, but if you look around here, you'll see that doesn't seem to work very well.

Thanks for the recommendation, I really love Arvid's content!

I'm not sure you should start with tools. Instead start with frameworks :).

Firstly, I recommend you start with identifying the "problem" your potential customers face. From there you will be able to generate the right idea, which will take the shape of a product or service that addresses this problem.

I've been using the methods from User Experience (UX) Research to get a better understanding of my user's problems, and I think more founders should adopt these techniques. At the start of your business journey, you should aim to do more generative research to gain a solid grasp of the problem.

Once you understand the problem and who is facing it you should be able to put together a landing page with copy that speaks to your potential customers. You may not even need to have a product built yet at this stage. Good designs and marketing copy could suffice. Share this landing page in places where you believe your customers hang around (social media, Slack, Discord, Facebook groups, etc.)

If possible try to get a good number of your site visitors to pre-pay for your solution or at least leave their email address so that you can reach out to them when the product is ready.

Doing this will help de-risk the business and guarantee early adopters or paying customers by the time you launch.

    Good luck!

    I'll be crude and straight.

Just go out and sell your idea to potential customers (even if you don't have anything, you can fake it). From there, iterate.

    Less tools is more.

You make an assumption (I think people with this characteristic can be customers) and test it to see if it's true. Keep pushing until you have a detailed overview of how your customers look.

I also have this question. I've been building some free products for a while but when coming to starting a paid product I'm just getting stuck.

If you have a few users, you can validate your idea (kinda) try Sean Ellis free template: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/CFXJH7M

If you don’t have any users, an easy start is to ask friends and family to use it, but they ofc have to have the need.

If you don’t know anyone who might be needing/wanting your product/service it is a much larger topic. The answer is also very dependent on your product/service. There’s no good general answer. If you have something concrete I can give some ideas
