How do you write text for your landing pages?

Hey,

I wonder how other people write clear, easy to understand sentences for their LPs.
I found http://www.hemingwayapp.com/ really useful. Most of the time I overcomplicate my texts. So I rewrite them over and over till it is readable by a 6th grader.
What tools do you use for writing texts?

For me, it's all about setting the tone of voice before starting. Are you going for a more professional, polished tone? Maybe something with more swagger? Pretty much this will set the tone of voice.

Then, it's the number of words. While some copywriters won't set a limit for themselves, I think setting a limit helps me communicate the message of the company in a clearer way (skipping filler words and sentences).

It's all about knowing what you want to communicate before you start typing on your keyboard.

I second this. Before setting the tone of voice, think about who your audience is, then define a voice to talk to them, then based on the unique selling points, write a powerful copy!

Take a look at Mailchimp style guide, you'll learn a lot from them: https://styleguide.mailchimp.com/

    I use Hemingway.

But for the love of everything, read your copy out loud.

Leave it for a few hours and then re-read it out loud then think about all the questions people will have when they read it, then make sure you answer all those questions in a logical fashion on your landing page.

I'd completely forgotten about hemingwayapp. I remember using it before a while ago.

We make a draft and then go through it with an external freelance copywriter and explain our ideas and what we're trying to say. Then the copywriter re-works the texts and presents a polished version.

I like Hemingway app but a lot of work before using it, like keyword research with Google Console and Ahrefs. They are my BFF in writing and making changes on LPs :)

I have the same approach, I usually have my first draft, publish it, and then edit the html of the site a million times until it looks and reads right!

... Then I change it again!

Do you use hemingwayapp for it? Or anything similar?

      1. 1

Never used it, but might have to give it a try!

I usually use my wife as a litmus test. She can usually spot the bad ones for me.

I like this tip Andras. Writing to a 6th grade reading level can sometimes be difficult 😅

It is actually very-very difficult. This is why Hemingway was a great writer.

I use Hemingway but for client work I do a lot of research to see who their customers are, how they talk, what their style of communication might be, what they care about most, their education level, comprehension level, accessibility level etc...

Made getconversionchecklist.com to keep me on track :)

Thanks. I like your chrome extension

Sometimes editing is easier than starting with a blank page. Try recording yourself (or one of the founders) quickly describing the product. You can transcribe the words and then improve on it.

The paid version of Grammarly has a similar functionality to the Hemingway app

    Write something.
    Remove words.
    Remove more words.
    Remove even more words.
    That's it, job done!
