How does the project ideation process work?

Here's something simple to get you started.

Community + Event + Problem = IDEA!

1. Target a community/tribe. Examples:

• "Job Seekers"
• "Teachers"
• "Freelancers"

2. Find some kind of event that the members of the tribe routinely engage in.

• Job seekers create resumes
• Teachers grade essays
• Freelancers buy software to run their business

3. Identify a problem the members of the tribe experience as they engage in the event.

• Job seekers don't know the right keywords to include in their resumes to get the attention of resume bots. IDEA = AHREFS for job seekers? By role/company/position?
• Teachers don't have enough time to deeply read 100 essays in just a few days.
  IDEA = Machine Learning for grading essays
• Freelancers lose track of all the tools they've purchased or acquired and end up wasting money by not using tools IDEA = A virtual "toolbag" app for freelancers which keeps track of which tools do what, costs, and experience using them

These ideas may not be the right fit for you, but you can use the pattern here to literally find hundreds of ideas in a short timeframe. Once you identify a few ideas you like, then you start validating whether there is a market for your idea and whether it is something that is feasible for you to build.

A lot of the "community" comments can be reduced down to talking to people & try to solve someone else's problem. That begins with talking to people, making friends with strangers. Then there's the whole Public Interest Technology sector which is ripe with problems looking for people to solve.

My favorite way is to find products that people are using that are too big and expensive. Like the products that cost $599/month and do 100 different things. Then pick one of the features of the product that you could do better (or at least as well). Then market the product to the people who want that feature but don't need the big expensive version.

I recommend reading Arvid Kahl's book The Embedded Entrepreneur. He talks about finding product ideas by embedding yourself in communities. There is a whole how to guide to do that. https://embeddedentrepreneur.com

Solve a problem you have, that you think others have (and is commercial, not a note taking tool)

Copy another product that you think you can do better

One more way to find an idea - is to copy existing product you really like.

Go to the Product Hunt and take a product you like.

Just try it. It works. You can’t to build a full copy, but you can build a better product. Some iterations and you will build a startup.
