How I Avoid Scam Websites by Checking Domain Trust Before Doing Business

I've been burned by shady sites more times than I'd like to admit.

Last month, I nearly entered payment details on a domain that looked completely legitimate. A closer look revealed missing security headers, poor email authentication, and a questionable history.

That experience changed how I evaluate unfamiliar websites.

Now, before considering affiliate partnerships, guest post opportunities, or sharing any sensitive information, I take a few seconds to review factors like:

• SSL certificate validity
• Domain age and ownership history
• SPF and email authentication records
• Security headers and technical signals
• Overall domain reputation

Most of these details are easy to overlook manually, but they can reveal red flags that aren't obvious from the website itself.

Curious how others approach this.

Do you have a checklist for verifying websites before working with them, or have you had any close calls with domains that looked trustworthy at first glance?
