How I bootstrapped a WhatsApp translator to 50K users with zero marketing

Hey IH community!

I've been lurking here for a while, learning from all your amazing journeys. Finally decided to share mine.

The problem

I run a small cross-border trading business. Most of my clients speak Spanish, Arabic, and Portuguese. Every day I was doing the same thing:

1. Receive a WhatsApp message in Spanish

2. Copy it

3. Open Google Translate in a new tab

4. Paste → translate

5. Copy the English version

6. Switch back to WhatsApp

7. Type my response in English

8. Translate it to Spanish

9. Copy → paste → send

For DOZENS of messages a day. The context switching alone was driving me insane. By the time I replied to one message, three more had come in.

Building the first version

I'm not a professional developer. I know enough JavaScript to be dangerous. So I built a simple userscript that injected translations into WhatsApp Web. It was ugly. It broke when WhatsApp updated their DOM. But it saved me hours every day.

Then I added auto-detection for the contact's language based on their phone number prefix. Then quick phrase templates for common business replies. Then multiple translation engines so I could pick the best one for each language pair.

I shared it with a few fellow sellers in a WeChat group. Within a month, 500 people were using it. That's when I realized this wasn't just my problem.

Turning it into a real product

- Built a proper Chrome extension with an options page

- Added a subscription backend (Go + MySQL + Stripe)

- Created a free tier to remove all friction

- Designed a simple landing page

No VC. No co-founder. No marketing budget. Just me, evenings and weekends, for about 8 months.

How we got to 50K users

| Channel | Result |

|---------|--------|

| Word-of-mouth in trade communities | ~60% of users |

| Chrome Web Store organic | ~25% |

| Reddit posts | ~10% |

| Everything else | ~5% |

We tried Twitter ads once. $200 spent, 3 conversions. Never again.

Current numbers

- Users: 50K+ active

- MRR: Growing steadily (won't share exact numbers yet, but it's real)

- Pricing: Free (1 hr/mo) / Pro $5/mo or $48/yr

- Team: 1 person (me)

- Support: Email only (vipqing123@gmail.com)

- WebSite:https://watransai.com/

What I learned

1. Solve your own problem. You know the pain points better than any market research.

2. Free tier is everything. Especially for a Chrome extension. People won't pay for something they haven't tried.

3. WhatsApp is king in many markets. If your target users are in LATAM, Middle East, Africa, or Southeast Asia, they're on WhatsApp. Period.

4. Technical debt is real. WhatsApp Web changes their DOM constantly. Every update breaks something. I spend more time fixing than building new features.

5. Bootstrapping is slow but sustainable. No pressure from investors. No burning runway. Just steady growth.

What's next

- Product Hunt launch (preparing now)

- Better support infrastructure

- More language engines

- Maybe a team member to handle support

Happy to answer any questions! 🙏
