How I Built a Browser Extension to Tackle Privacy and Security Risks

A few days ago, I stumbled upon MegaLag’s video, “The Greatest Scam in the History of the Creator Economy”. It sheds light on Honey’s questionable practices and made me think deeply about the hidden risks lurking in browser extensions.

Not long after, I came across another alarming story:

CyberHaven’s Chrome Extension was backdoored to steal user information.

As someone passionate about user privacy and security, I couldn’t ignore the red flags anymore. Browser extensions are a convenience we all love, but they often come at a cost—high-risk permissions, data harvesting, and potential backdoors.

So, I decided to do something about it.

I built Extension Auditor, a browser extension that helps users understand the security implications of their installed extensions.

Here’s what it does:

• Visibility: Provides a clear overview of all installed extensions and flags those requesting high-risk permissions.
• Empowerment: Educates users about potential risks, enabling them to make informed decisions.

Of course, no single tool can solve the broader problem of malicious extensions or unethical practices. But my goal is to raise awareness and equip users with the information they need to take control of their digital security.

While the extension is free (and I intend to keep it that way), I’m also exploring ways to turn it into a sustainable product that solves real problems for people while generating revenue. It’s still early days, but I’d love to hear your feedback!
