How I Built an App That Cut My Phone Usage by 60%

I wanted to share a project I've been working on for the past year - an app called Limit Buddy that helps people reduce their phone usage through social accountability.

The Problem

American adults spend an average of 4 hours and 39 minutes daily on their phones and I wasn’t much better, clocking in at an average of 4 hours and 3 minutes. I wasn't paying attention to my partner, I was constantly tuning out the world, and my attention span was suffering.

I tried the standard set of solutions - Freedom, Forest, AppBlocker, greyscaling, Cold Turkey, even using a dumb phone. Nothing worked. I found ways around the blockers, the greyscale was just annoying, and the dumb phone was, well, too dumb to actually use in real life.

The Solution

After burning through all these methods, I realized these apps were treating the problem wrong. They focused on restriction and blocking rather than actual behavior change. The breakthrough came when I started looking at it as an addiction problem instead of a self-control issue.

Looking at addiction research, I found that programs like Alcoholics Anonymous are super effective because of their social accountability aspect. That became the foundation for
Limit Buddy.

Here's how it works:

  • You set limits for your total phone time and specific apps
  • Pick an accountability buddy (I use my wife)
  • If you go over your limits, your buddy gets an automatic email
  • You get weekly reports to track your progress
  • Everything is automatic. No manual tracking or other setup required

The Results

For me, the results have been incredible. My phone usage dropped from 4h 3m to just 1h 39m daily. I'm more engaged at work, I actually have time to read now, and I'm more present in conversations with my wife.

Please give it a try I would love to hear your feedback and know if it works for you as well as anything I could improve.
