How I built an open-source Obsidian alternative with Rust, AI, and "Vibe Coding"

The "Note-taking Tax" is real.

For years, I felt that my thoughts were either trapped in a proprietary cloud (like Notion) or locked within closed-source ecosystems (like Obsidian). While these tools are powerful, as a developer, I never felt I truly owned my digital legacy.

So, I decided to build my own "forever tool": MindZJ.

The Vision

MindZJ exists to solve three core pain points:

True Data Sovereignty: 100% Open-source and offline-first. Your notes are plain .md files on your disk. No logins, no tracking, no hidden code.

Extreme Performance & Zero Noise: Built with Rust and Tauri 2.0. The installer is only 16MB. More importantly: no annoying mandatory update pop-ups or nagging reminders. You control the tool, not the other way around.

AI-Native Workflow: I’ve integrated local AI (via Ollama) and cloud models (Claude/OpenAI) to enhance the writing process without sacrificing privacy.

Built with "Vibe Coding"

As a solo developer, I didn't do this alone. I leveraged the power of "Vibe Coding"—partnering with AI agents (Claude Code, Gemini, and Codex) to handle complex Rust logic and UI architecture. It allowed me to ship a professional-grade product at a speed I never thought possible.

Launching Today!

MindZJ is officially launching on Product Hunt TODAY! I’m nervous but excited to share it with the world.

I’d love to hear your thoughts: For those of you who value privacy and performance, what's the one thing missing from your current note-taking setup?
