How I Built Baby Safa — an AI Chat Widget in Flutter with a Python Backend (Embeddable Anywhere)

I’ve always been fascinated by the idea of having a friendly, helpful AI assistant right on a website — something that could answer questions, guide users, or just be a little more engaging than a static help page.

So I decided to build Baby Safa, my AI-powered chat widget.
The goal was simple:

Make it easy to embed into any website as a single JavaScript snippet.

Keep it secure — no API keys exposed in the frontend.

Give it a smooth, modern chat experience with features like voice input and typing animations.

Tech Stack

  • Frontend: Flutter Web → compiled into a JS embeddable widget

  • Backend: Python (FastAPI)

  • Security: API key authentication handled entirely in the backend

  • Hosting: Render for the frontend widget, Vercel for backend demo

Challenges I Faced

Embedding Flutter in Other Websites

Flutter isn’t typically used for embeddable widgets, so I had to wrap the build output in a way that plays nicely when loaded via <script> tag.

Keeping API Keys Safe

I didn’t want to see another AI widget with API keys sitting in browser DevTools. That’s why all model calls are routed through the Python backend.

Making It Feel Natural
Added a typing animation and voice input so it feels more like talking to a real assistant rather than sending plain text to a bot.

Current Features

API key authentication

Voice input

Typing animation

Embeddable anywhere with a single script tag

Backend logic for custom response handling

You can play with Baby Safa right now:

For the backend interface:

What’s Next

I’m planning to add:

Multiple themes for widget customization

Multi-language support

Analytics for chat interactions

I’d Love Your Feedback

If you try Baby Safa, let me know:

Was it easy to use?

What features would make it more useful for your site?

Any UI/UX improvements you’d suggest?

Thanks for reading, and happy to answer any questions!
