How I Built MD2FILE: A Markdown to PDF Converter for Writers and Developers

Hey Indie Hackers! I wanted to share my journey of building MD2FILE, a Markdown editor and PDF converter designed to make writing, editing, and exporting documents seamless for developers, writers, and professionals.

The Problem: Markdown’s Limitations in Document Sharing

As a developer, I love writing in Markdown—it’s simple, clean, and efficient. But when it comes to sharing markdown files as polished documents, things get tricky. Converting markdown to PDF or HTML while preserving formatting was often a hassle. I found myself using multiple tools and struggling with inconsistent results.

That’s when I realized there was a gap—a tool that lets you write in Markdown with ease and export professional-looking PDFs and HTML with one click. So, I decided to build MD2FILE!

The Solution: A Markdown Editor Built for Simplicity and Power

MD2FILE isn’t just another Markdown editor. I wanted to create a feature-rich yet intuitive tool that would solve real pain points. Some key features include:

  • WYSIWYG controls – Making Markdown editing easier, even for beginners.

  • Real-time preview with scroll sync – See how your document will look as you write.

  • One-click export to PDF & HTML – No more messy conversions.

  • LaTeX support – Perfect for rendering mathematical equations.

  • Mermaid diagrams & UML support – Ideal for developers and technical writers.

  • Customizable syntax colors – Personalize your writing environment.

Growth & Early Traction

I launched an early version and shared it in small developer communities. The response was better than expected—people loved how it simplified their workflow! I got valuable feedback, improved the UI, and added features based on user requests.

Now, I’m focusing on getting more users, refining the tool, and adding integrations to make MD2FILE even better.

Lessons Learned & Advice for Fellow Indie Hackers

  • Build for a real pain point – I created MD2FILE because I needed it myself. Solve your own problems, and others will find value in it too.

  • Get user feedback early – Talking to real users helped me shape the product better than I could have alone.

  • Keep it simple – More features don’t always mean a better product. Focus on what truly matters.

What’s Next? I’d Love Your Feedback!

I’m working on expanding MD2FILE’s reach, adding more integrations, and making it even more user-friendly. If you use Markdown regularly, I’d love for you to try it out and share your thoughts!

Would love to hear from you—What tools do you use for Markdown editing and PDF conversion? Let’s discuss!

Nice integration with Mermaid! For anyone who wants to preview their Mermaid diagrams before exporting to PDF, webtoolz.dev/mermaid has live rendering and shareable SVG URLs that work great in docs.

The Latex function in the markdown and the pdf looks very different. The pdf lacks proper rendering.

I really appreciate your feedback abdu2021! Are you able to share some examples of any specific formulas you tried that didn't render properly?
