How I chose which analytics tool to use.

Hi all 👋

During August, I explored many analytics tools to use for Writings. I wrote a detailed blog post to share my lessons learned from the process.

I hope you'll find it useful and speed up the decision process.

Very well-written article! I'm glad Pirsch is on your list :)

Your point about not getting enough insight into your visitor's intentions is valid and something we're working on for our next bigger update.

      I am curious! Any hints?

We'll be adding funnels and a session details view. It will take a while before we have it ready, probably next year :)

          Thanks! No problem, waiting!

Thanks! :) I am looking forward to the new update. 🙌

I have never heard of Splitbee. Thanks for the good summary!

If so, have you heard of Logspot before? 🙃

No, I use Pirsch. Would you recommend it?

Of course, I want. I do it with many tools now. Thanks, I will check out the tool.

I should be asking for referral bonus 😂

Thanks for this very complete review Aleksandar!
Just a small thing I spoted in your article: Plausible costs $9 a month, but you wrote "charged $108 for an annual subscription". You get two months free if you take the annual plan so what you meant to say is $90 instead of $108.

Thanks for the kind words Emile. You are right actually, I will edit the text with the suggested correction. My bad. Thanks for catching it up!

Whats about "big" event-based analytics like Amplitude or Firebase Analytics?

    1. 1

Firebase Analytics is getting integrated into Google Analytics slowly - as for Amplitude I have 0 experience with it. I took just 5 simple tools popular within the indie scene and analyzed them. I tried few more, but then I should have released an ebook if I wrote for all 😅

We are using Onduis.com, they made it simple to share data, and they're GDPR compliant

      Never heard, will check! Thanks

Just the dish, not the tool 😋 I will have a look, didn't know about it. Thanks.

Great rundown of analytics tools! Another tool to check out if you care about privacy is Simple Analytics. I've been a happy users since a few years back!

Ah looks nice. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks, nice overview, just recently have been discussing the alternatives of GA tools, and looked closer at Matomo as well. It seemed to me that Matomo gives the old good taste of Universal Analytics while Google is moving itself towards a more analytical GA4. And users are resistant because it takes so much new to learn.
But the issue with GA, as far as I get it, is not only usability but also threshholding or sampling.

Thanks for the compliments Faina. Definitely, Matomo is an all-in tool and for some people, it actually works. Also thanks for the clues about the sampling thresholds of GA, didn't know 🤔

    Great summary!

If you don't have personal and business reasons against GA - why not? Its complexity and size do not make it an inefficient tool. 👌
