An audience Follows your content.
A community Follows... well, you.
For example, if you read this and you give it an upvote, it's probably because you liked the content, not the guy who wrote it (did you even checked my username before upvoting ?). You are the audience. I'm just the guy who gives you some sugar content, end of the story.
But in some cases, you give an upvote without even reading the title of a post just because someone you really like is posting it. This is a (huge and strong) community.
The chances are that you probably won't make sales through an audience channel. BUT an audience is outstanding for feedback/self-learning/sharing. My opinion is that you CAN start selling via an audience; that was my case :
I've recently reached my goal - December goal reached - 5 pre-orders - and almost double it by making 9 pre-orders so far!
I started months ago on LinkedIn by sharing every 2 days short and visual content to a niche audience - with the right hashtags. I got thousands of new contacts. I won't lie; getting hundreds of likes on each post feels good and gives you this nice feeling that you have made something special, and you always want more. But there is a downside: every time you share something personal, nobody likes or comments anymore. Congratulations, you just built an audience.
Thanks to this established audience, I started to build a small BUT strong community by sharing more personal content, building in public, sharing things I was struggling about, and things I really loved. Fortunately, this strategy worked for me and it really helped me build my product.
This is my personal advice: If you have an audience, try to create a community ASAP, or you'll lose a lot of traction.
