ONE LINE EXPLANATION - I stopped chasing investors, spammed my customers with DMs, and did the demos myself until it worked.
So, it all started a few weeks ago when my prototype was ready and I was convinced I needed an Angel investor to make PlutoSearch Big. I spent dozens of hours polishing pitch decks and trying to find a seat at tables that weren't ready for me. As a 21-year-old student with no "big name" connections, I went all in. I sent over 100 personalized cold emails, LinkedIn messages, and Instagram DMs.
The result? Total silence. No "it's too early," no "not for us"—just 100% ghosted. It’s a lonely feeling when you realize your "dream" isn't even worth a 30-second rejection email to the people you’re chasing.
Then it hit me: Investors don’t care about how good your idea is; they only care about how good of an executor you are. I realized I was begging for a seat at a table that didn't want me, so I decided to build my own. I stopped looking for a "boss" with a checkbook and started looking for the people who actually had the problem I was solving.
I told my team: "Forget the VCs. DM every single potential customer we can find. Get them on a call with me."
I went from staring at an empty inbox to a calendar full of back-to-back demos. I started my days at 8 AM and ended them with a sore throat. At first, I was terrible at it. I’d spend 45 minutes on a single pitch to someone who wasn't even interested. I was over-explaining, over-selling, and wasting time.
But I didn't stop. I treated every "No" like a free lesson.
The Reality of the Hustle: To get my first 3 paid beta users, here is what the funnel actually looked like:
1,000+ Cold DMs sent across every platform possible.
100 Replies (Mostly "not interested").
40 Live Demos (Where I personally showed the tool).
1 Sale for every 12-15 demos.
That 45-minute pitch? I’ve ground it down to 20 minutes now. My goal is to get it under 5.
What this taught me -
Kill the Introvert: You cannot build a business from behind a code editor alone. You have to talk to people until you understand their pain better than they do.
Rejection is your best friend: The investors who ghosted me gave me nothing. The customers who rejected my demo gave me the roadmap to make PlutoSearch better.
Execution is the only currency: Anyone can have a "million-dollar idea," but very few people are willing to send 1,000 DMs to prove it.
PlutoSearch isn't just a "prototype" anymore. It’s a tool shaped by the feedback of 40 real founders. I’m keeping this first cohort small so I can actually support everyone, and I have some spots left for the $10/month Beta.
If you’re tired of "guessing" your market moves and want to see the engine I’ve been pitching my heart out for, let’s get to work.
