How I got 79 pieces of landing page feedback in the last 6 hours.

I was able to get 79 pieces of feedback from 9 users on a landing page experiment today. It took just an average of 60 seconds for each of the participants.

Fast, easy, and actionable. Here's how...

Background

Most recently, I’ve been working on a small application that sends gratitude reminders by text message (Daily Thanks). It’s something I’ve been using daily for the past few months and has about a dozen users. So I’ve ‘launched’, but the product is still an MVP.

Like most people at this early stage, I’m trying to grapple with a few different challenges, primarily: distribution and market.

And one area we all like to focus on is our landing page.

"...does it suck?" "Is it resonating?" "Will it convert?"

As I look across posts and responses in the Landing Page Feedback group, there are a couple things that stand out:

  1. Most requests for help have very few responses
  2. Some of the detailed responses probably took 5-15 minutes to compose

And the detailed feedback isn’t the crux of what we’re after. At least, it’s not what I’m after. Instead, I want 20 people to see my site, and quickly respond "good" or "bad".

Getting 20 responses is hard to do. And once you have 20 people providing feedback, what's the right feedback to take? It's not easy understanding the signal from the noise.

Approach

To simplify feedback cycles, I built Indie Swarm. It provides faster, easier, and actionable feedback on your webpage through simple 👍 and 👎 voting.

Today was the first time I tested it in production and it felt... magical.

I asked for feedback from my current users and in the Indie Worldwide slack channel (shout out to @AntCas for his tireless efforts there).

For the person giving feedback, this is what they saw:
Daily Thanks Feedback

To provide feedback, the reviewers just voted by clicking likes (👍) and dislikes (👎) across the page. You can see the above demo here.

The average session time per reviewer was just 60.1 seconds.

Results

This was the piece that felt magical.

As reviewers were providing likes (👍) and dislikes (👎) across my page, I could see anonymous results updating in real-time.

Indie Swarm Results(The x axis is the element on the page.)

The feedback provided has been fantastic. From the results, I know that the most controversial items on my site are:

  1. Gratitude is a verb. (header)
  2. (...psst, you need to practice daily) (subheader, already deleted)
  3. Send a text when you're thankful. Get a summary emailed to you every week. (summary text)

This is all useful, actionable information — now I know where to focus my efforts. And it's also given me confidence to move my demo landing page into prod.

Thanks for reading. If you've had trouble getting feedback on your landing page or need feedback on a current project, check out Indie Swarm. Happy to answer any questions in the comments.

    Nice write up Erik 👍

One thought, it would be nice to provide a way to gather some long-form feedback as well. Why don't they like a certain part of your copy?

      Yeah, this is good feedback.

My hunch is that there’s a niche in capturing reactions to a page more than detailed feedback (there are some nice products for detailed feedback, design collaboration, etc).

      Gestalt vs analysis.

But I may add a free text box at the end. Or text box with the question “what does this business do”
