How I got first 100 subscribers from LinkedIn in 1 day

Hi Hackers,
This week I launched my newsletter - https://eastvc.news

It is a brief weekly newsletter about startup funding in NYC and Boston. It will be simple summary of all deals and subscribers will get it every Monday morning.

I decided to launch on LinkedIn, because I thought that my connections there could be interested. Also, helped that I work in this industry so many of my connections are interested into the newsletter – I build potential audience before launching newsletter.

First, I share it on my profile and couple of my friends also share it.
Second, I send DMs to people I personally know and have them as a connection.
Third thing that brought me the most subscribers is that I posted it into LinkedIn groups that are about startups and venture capital in Boston and NYC. Most of these groups have few thousand members so reach can be big.

So, after doing all this in 1 day total number is 102 subscribers.
Hope this might help you to reach more audience for your newsletter, LinkedIn seems like a good place to catch first subscribers.

Currently I launched on Product Hunt so in case you like it, subscribe and upvote 😊

This is amazing @Boston123 - inspired by your strategy already!

I'm currently running this newsletter, keen to know how you'd run / fix this newsletter :)

Thx for checking. Subscribe if you like it. I checked your newsletter and I like the design. The only thing I would recommend to make a newsletter a bit longer (in case you have materials to write about).

Hey @Boston123 thanks for your feedback. I'm about to implement your ideas and would love to thank you on my monthly update. Are you on Twitter? Let's chat!

          Followed you on Twitter.

Congrats! LinkedIn is a great source for some initial users and anything social media related to help bootstrap things. Keep at it!

Thank you. Now the harder part, how to get subscribers outside social media bootstraping :)

  3. 2

This is great! Thanks for sharing, I might follow this strategy when I launch my own startup product in the next couple of months.

Thank you for the support. LinkedIn should be a good place to launch, you have time to build the audience and connections there until you launch.

Well done! This is the really basic stuff, but definitely needs to be done and see if you get any traction from it.

Now make sure you include some clear messages asking people to forward/recommend it. That's going to be your biggest growth source.

    1. 1

This is good point! After I send first newsletter do you think I should also send email to subscribers asking them to forward/recommend to others or that would be a bit too direct?

      1. 3

I personally include a message in the header/footer of each newsletter asking subscribers to recommend it to a friend/colleague who they think might enjoy it as well.

Never asume people would do something, ask them to do it. Find the right tone, but a always ask.

        1. 1

          Will do that.
          Thank you for the advice.

    Sounds great! well done!

Great achievement for one day @Boston123. Well done!

I've yet to really promote my sports newsletter on Linkedin only because I'm full-time employed and I use that platform for my day job. When I will do a push a on Linkedin it will probably be over the weekend even though engagement is probably down with less people on the platform. Curious if anyone has noticed a difference in promoting on Linkedin over the week vs weekend.

    1. 1

I think people spend more time on LinkedIn during working day than on weekends, that's why I posted it on Monday. I might be wrong.

Congrats! I've been having a lot more engagement on posts I make on LinkedIn vs Twitter and I have coincidentally close to the same amount of following on each platform (558 LinkedIn connections and 519 followers on Twitter).

Good to know, I think Twitter only works if you have few K followers. What I found weird on LinkedIn is their algorithm for posts. Sometimes I post something and some of my friends don't see it right away but after 2 days it show on the news feed. I'm not sure if you noticed.

      1. 2

Ya, I have noticed odd things from the LinkedIn algorithm (e.g. seeing people's posts they have posted a few weeks or even months ago show up in today's news feed).
