How I Grew to 30,000 Followers in a Year: A Simple Guide for Social Media Strategy

Hi, fellow Indie hacker.

So you're starting a business, just like me.
And you probably didn't sign up to be a content creator.
well, neither did I.
But if you're just starting out, you have few clients, if any.
Budget is tight - you gotta be smart.

While creating content costs you time (and time is money), posting it is free—and it’s one of the most powerful ways to expose your brand.

As I launched my branding and marketing business, I built a following of 30,000 in just one year—almost entirely through organic growth, with only a small fraction of my budget spent on ads.

Here's how I did it, and how you can too.

1. Know Your Brand and Set Clear Goals

First things first.

Start by answering these questions:

  • Where does my brand sit in the marketplace?
  • Are you selling a product or building a personal brand?
  • What's unique about my positioning?
  • Who's doing what I want to do so I can learn from them?
  • What's your main objective with your page?

Okay, basics! But more often than not these questions are overlooked.

2. Get Specific with Your Audience

Knowing exactly who you're talking to allows you to tailor your content effectively.

  • Who are they?
  • What do they value?
  • What content are they consuming?

In my case, understanding that my audience consists of professionals in marketing, tech, entrepreneurship, and design helps me create content that resonates with them.

3. Create Your Editorial Lines (Often overlooked, yet pure gold)

Editorial lines are the pillars of your content strategy—they keep your messaging consistent and focused.

Examples of Editorial Lines:

a. Dialogue and Provocation
- Promote critical thinking to generate engagement.
- For example, I made a reel about "Why Bad design is good design"

b. Case Studies
- I share success stories in branding, content creation, and sales strategies
- For example - “Here's my quick thoughts about the Impossible Foods Rebrand”

c. Educational Content
- Offer tips, how-tos, and industry insights
- For example - "How to grow to 30k followers in one year?”

Decide on 3-5 editorial lines that align with your brand and audience interests. Use tools like ChatGPT - It'll help you stay on brand.

4. Create a Consistent Workflow

You'll get tired! But keep going - Consistency is everything.

In your Monthly Planning:

  • Outline themes, promotions, and engagement tactics
  • Schedule important dates and launches

And here's my weekly routine: (SUPER IMPORTANT)

  • Monday: Draft content ideas.
  • Tuesday: Write scripts and copy.
  • Wednesday: Record videos and editing.
  • Thursday: Finalize and create thumbnails.
  • Friday: Content is approved; research new content

I aim to plan 3-4 weeks in advance, but sometimes life happens, and I work week-by-week. The key is to keep going.

Two important questions here: How often are you posting? and How are you engaging with comments and DMS?

5. Promote High-performing Content

When a video or post does exceptionally well - gets more views, comments and shares than usual - put some money behind it to reach a wider audience.

Promote it!
That video will bring people to your page.
But remember, people will only follow you if they see consistent, relevant content.
So, it's a constant effort.

Each platform has different capabilities for promotion, and you definitely wanna learn how to optimize your budget.

Last step,

6. Provide Additional Value

I created two digital products - simple, but nicely done cheatsheets, and offered them for free.
Over 2000 people downloaded them and I gained around 5k followers or more directly.
It brought me followers and built trust.

Think about what you can offer.

Final Thoughts

Content might not have been part of your original plan, but it's a powerful catalyst for growth. Maybe you don't realize that yet, but your insights are valuable - share them.

I hope that was helpful.

I made the mistake early on of trying to grow too fast without a real plan, which just led to random followers who never engaged.

What helped me was going super consistent with posting and actually replying to people more.

Also, I did buy real Instagram followers https://famoid.com/buy-instagram-followers/ at one point to give my profile a bit of social proof—just made sure they looked legit and didn’t mess with my stats.
