I’m the founder of Alternative AI (https://alternativeai.io/) - an AI Directory/Marketplace that serves many SaaS AI founders and developers. It’s only been six months since its inception, but I’ve recently had success with cold outreach and adapting to organic marketing techniques. My first post (https://www.indiehackers.com/post/how-we-gained-our-first-100-users-in-25-days-and-you-can-too-17d5e8fbad) on growing my user base with $0 marketing was well-received, so I decided to write a series outlining each of these organic marketing steps and strategies in the hope that it will assist the Indie Hacker community. While my experience stems from my directory, these strategies are generalizable to other SaaS businesses and apps.
Why I Decided To Start With Writing About Reddit?
Mostly because it was the most commented question in my last post and also because it’s the most discussed and least understood platform: Reddit. It’s surely a favorite among Indie Hackers. Reddit’s audience skews on the younger side and is nearly 70% male. While the platform is still largely associated with gaming and fandom culture, there are active communities for everything from cat paw lovers to beauty and beyond hackers. If I know anything about the Reddit demographics, it matches the IH community (well, mostly!).So we all can feel at home :)
General Perception of Reddit
Before diving into Indie hacking, I spent many years in the corporate world. Many marketers, especially in the B2B space, are hesitant to use Reddit for marketing. I could never convince my bosses to advertise or even hang out on Reddit! Even in the SMB or solopreneur space, Reddit is often seen as a black hole. Some fear being banned; others worry about being associated with the site. Despite its massive number of monthly active users, many shy away. But if you’re afraid of Reddit, you’re missing out on a great marketing opportunity, especially now after the recent Google HCU update, provided you know how to leverage the site. My goal here is not to guarantee success but to share what worked for me and mostly help you understand what Redditors want and how to navigate the platform effectively. So let's begin.
To genuinely engage with the community, I had to convert to being a Redditor first and a marketer second. Meaning - Dont spam, Dont brag , Be helpful - well, you get the drift here.
Assuming you know what Karma is - its the lifeblood of Reddit. An easy and effective way to boost your karma is by getting upvotes. Share anything that catches people’s attention, like photos, memes, funny pictures or jokes, news articles, and other images. I boosted my karma by asking questions relevant to the subreddits. For example, I posted a comment in the subreddit /r/ecommerce asking for their experience with AI apps and recommendations. This not only helped me understand popular apps and features the e-commerce community loves but also gave insights into price points and preferences. I got 110 upvotes and 95 commenst .This method worked after days of being ignoted and lonely - so I did what a good growth hacker would do -REPEAT- phew! Within ten days, I had sufficient Karma to post in the /r/artificialintelligence subreddit, which has higher Karma requirements and leftover Karma and Gold to my credit.
To hack your way in, you can also try the subreddit /r/FreeKarma. All you need to do is post a request, and you’ll get more karma and the possibility of achieving your goals. For example, consider posting a picture of a rescued one-legged dog who needs help.Dang, who can refuse !!
Based on what I said above - Reddit thrives on karma, so grow it by linking all your great posts to create a synchronous topic. Increase your reach by being inclusive and broadening your scope. For instance, in my case, I aim to promote my brand while solving common pain points users face when trying to grow their brand or SaaS. I find a subreddit that will benefit from using AI but is least likely to try it and offer them tools and advice on leveraging AI for growth. I usually stick to free tools and give shout-outs to founders listed on my platform on relevant topics. This not only increases my karma (relevant for both point 4 and 5) by helping a SaaS founder but also builds authority in what I have to say.
It’s no exaggeration to say there’s a subreddit for just about everything. Beyond popular subreddits like /r/IAITA (Am I the A** H**E) or /r/sideprojects, there are many large niche communities such as /r/Fingerboards, a community of people who enjoy fingerboarding (with over 33,000 members). Make sure any subreddits you choose to have a large number of participants interested in what you’ve got to offer. These forums usually have more people looking at them, and greater visibility can help you attract visitors.
To attract new visitors, find and participate in discussions relevant to your niche, and link back to your site when appropriate. Remember, you’ll need to include keywords if you want people to find your blog, so use them! Placing a link in a comment or post is only available to Reddit users with a certain level of karma. Many subreddits are forbidden to comment using accounts with karma below a particular mark. So do so after looking at your available karma and the rules of that subreddit, else you will run the risk of getting downvoted or even deleted. When writing your post, make sure your text is formatted correctly. Divide it into paragraphs and use lists, bold fonts, and bullet points where applicable to make your content easier to read. Explain complex issues in simple and easy-to-understand terms so that as many of your readers can investigate the situation further. Share a personal experience! I strongly recommend using personal pronouns, like “I” and “we,” when describing your project. It helps people trust you, making things more personable and less corporate.
In general, Reddit features some basic rules that apply to every subreddit. However, there are also special terms for each subreddit. You can find these in the right column on Reddit. Study these rules carefully if you want to build a sense of community with the group and avoid getting banned. For example, the subreddits artificial intelligence and ChatGPT are the ones with strict rules to avoid spammers—so work your way around to keep killing them with kindness, aka helpful comments.
If you want to advertise on Reddit (well, we all do), it’s essential to ask for permission from the moderators of the relevant part of the site. Neither users nor admins will take kindly to aggressive advertising. To win them over, explain your product and how it solves a problem or share a case study. Give people something engaging and valuable to read.
You can take this aspect of Reddit marketing further by reaching out to an admin at a relevant subreddit and requesting them to publish your link. Receiving approval from the admin could lead to more positive responses from the Reddit community. They might agree to post your link if your content does some good for the community or if you offer a reward, such as offering something for free or at a discounted cost or a blog that educates the community but also increases your site visits.
You can't please everyone—someday it will catch on to you. So if you feel something didn't go your way—delete it. Eventually, downvotes might fly your way. Hardly anybody will notice, and you’ll avoid losing karma points.
I didn't try this one - but have heard from many founders with small teams that this is a great tactic. So If you want to create a subreddit specific to your brand, you’re likely to enjoy the help of professionals. Of course, don’t expect people to automatically be interested in your brand and start asking questions immediately. If that happens, create an online support community that you can use as a form of promotion.
Redditors take their karma a bit too seriously. So, if you’re a new user looking for feedback, it’s simple! You can ask for it by posting your content on Reddit. You’ll surely get a response. The kind of post that gets noticed are ‘Roast my SaaS’ types, and people do roast it. Accounts on the platform are anonymized, so people are more than happy to openly express their opinion without fear of retaliation. You’ll get some honest feedback regarding your work and learn a little about how to advertise on Reddit simultaneously.
Write back to those interested in your content. If you’ve been active, the creator and the user will generate karma earned for engagement on all posts. By thanking users for feedback, you’ll establish trust, encouraging them to share your content again. And don’t forget: readers can comment on any post they like, and it will be included in the post’s score. Ensure that you reply to the users who comment on your post. This is one way to keep your post active and grow your karma in the process.
If you are launching and have a slim budget to advertise, use a bit of your marketing budget to give discounts. The Reddit community loves discounts. you post will be well received by admins and will allow you to add a line or two about your product with the promo codes. So, find your target audience, make a post about a discount or promo code, and see your traffic skyrocket. Redditors will likely try your product because of the promotion and, if they like it, will mention your site.
So that’s it. If you follow these simple 12 steps, you will be able to make your first sale on Reddit. There is no guarantee that it will work, but that’s the idea—test it!
Thanks fot sharing. I recently treid reddit for r/sidehustle for publishing my free AI tool, and my post got deleted. I didn't know about the karma points, or the way to hack into reddit. I'll follow your steps and try again.
Checked out alternativeai.io, and listed my tool :-)
