Hey Indie Hackers,
I’ve always been fascinated by how niche SEO works for small browser games. Last week, I decided to run an experiment: Could a fresh domain rank for a high-volume "unblocked" keyword without a massive backlink budget?
I chose a creepy indie horror game called Exhibit of Sorrows as my case study. Here’s exactly what I did and what I’m learning:
1. The "Clean UI" Bet Most browser game sites are cluttered with 50+ intrusive ads. I built my site with a focus on speed and a "clean" user experience. I even spent time designing a custom "Evil Eye" favicon to boost CTR in search results—small details matter when you’re a solo dev.
2. The Initial Spike To my surprise, within 3 days, I hit the first page for "Exhibit of Sorrows Unblocked." I started seeing real organic traffic. It was an incredible feeling to see a project go from 0 to 1 so fast.
3. The "Google Dance" Reality Check As soon as I added some SEO optimizations (like Favicon code and metadata), the site vanished from Page 1. If you've been in SEO, you know this "dance" is normal for new domains, but it’s still nerve-wracking.
4. My Strategy Now Instead of panicking, I'm focusing on "human-first" signals. I’ve been publishing guides on Medium and contributing to GitHub game lists to show Google this is a legitimate resource, not just a thin affiliate site.
I’d love some feedback from the community:
How do you handle the emotional rollercoaster of a new site's ranking fluctuations?
For those in the gaming niche, what’s your favorite way to build "soft" backlinks?
If you want to see the "Evil Eye" logo or check out the clean UI I'm talking about, here’s the project: exhibitofsorrows.org
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!
