How I Just Got Started ^tm

I just started. I followed a tutorial. I didn't try to make it my own at first, I just did it.

Back when (in my circles at least) there was a phase when renaming animals to something silly was the joke-of-the-day (raccoon = trash panda, stingray = sea flap-flap, etc) I thought it would be funny to refer to the common chickens that inhabit our little island home as "Key West Ground Parrots".

So I bought the domain. I built a quick static site with Eleventy. I made some stickers using deals on Sticker Mule. All in, I spent maybe $70. I deployed a site on Netlify and hooked it up to Stripe Checkout and sold a few. A passion project had suddenly paid for a domain I bought.

Then, my fiancé wanted to run a 5k "Turkey Trot" for Thanksgiving, but we couldn't find a virtual or real-world one that we liked. So I just started. I added a subdomain (5k.keywestgroundparrot.com) and set it up to be a cost-covering project as well as donating $5 from every entry to a local animal rescue farm run by the county sheriff's office. Fiancé made the artwork this time, so it's really good.

We're basically going to break even if anything, but I just got started and I'm proud. We "marketed" it on facebook and instagram and twitter, and we had a few word-of-mouth signups from people we've never met or heard of in addition to friends-of-friends. We just got started on this project, and we're just getting started.
