How I made 17 sales even before launch 😎

Hey Indiehackers,

I recently launched my new product, "Product Hunt Workbook" on Product Hunt and it ranked #2 Product of the Day.

But here's the part:

I didn't have to wait anxiously for the launch to start making sales.

I made 17 sales of the workbook even before the workbook was ready for launch.

How?

By nurturing my subscribers through emails and then selling pre-orders to them before my product was ready for launch.

Today I'm sharing those emails with you. You can use them to get pre-orders for your product while building the final phase of your product & make sales before launch.

Here are the 3 emails you should send to your email subscribers to make sales through pre-orders:

1) Mail 1 - Connect with your subscriber's problems (7 days before the pre-order sale)

This is the first email you will be sending to your subscribers about what your product is going to be about.

In this email don't talk anything about your product.

talk about this 👇

a) acknowledge the problems and painpoints your subscribers face within your niche

b) share how their life could improve if those problems were solved

c) And ask them to reply to you & let you know how these problems are affecting them

This will let you connect with your subscribers on a personal level, understand their thoughts and optimize your content & product messaging around them.

Mail 1

2) Mail 2 - Share the Background Story (4 days before the pre-order sale)

The best way to get subscribers to trust you and be ready to buy your product when you start selling it,

Is to share with them your story & reason behind building it.

So in this email,

a) share your personal journey & what problems you were facing in your life
b) What motivated you to build this product
c) and how this product will solve the problem.

This story needs to be personal and honest.

Mail 2

3) Mail 3 - Share How Your Product Will Solve their Problems (1 day before the pre-order sale)

This is the mail where you will be pitching the product you've built to solve the problem (Your digital Product / SaaS)

In this email,

i) Share how your product solves the user's problems
ii) How it will solve the problem better than the competition (features, speed, etc)
iii) Ask them to wait for the pre-order email tomorrow

Thank them for being your early believers at the end of the email,

And tell them that you have a special pre-order deal coming up the next day for them. If possible, tell them when they should expect your pre-order email (at what time they'll receive the mail),

To get more opens for your pre-order email.

Mail 3

Pre-Order Sale Email (The Big Day)

Now that the 3 step email sequence is complete,

Your subscribers are now warm and interested in pre-ordering your product.

This is the email where you make your first sale.

In this email, tell them:

i) All features and benefits of getting your product
ii) How each feature will solve their problem
iii) Benefits of pre-ordering it

Share with them what the price of the product will be at launch.

And how much money they can save by pre-ordering it today.

Also, give them an estimated timeline on when you're product will be available for them to access and start using,

So that it will motivate them to pre-order it & increase your sales 📈

Pre-order mail

And That's it!

This is the exact strategy we used to get 17 pre-orders for our product.

If You Follow all the steps above,

You will be able to make good sales from your pre-order, validate your idea and become profitable even before launching.

And you will be able to launch your product with full confidence 🔥

Massive congrats on ranking #2 Product of the Day with your "Product Hunt Workbook"! 🎉 That's no small feat. And the fact that you made sales even before the official launch? That's some next-level strategy right there.

I've got to say, your approach to nurturing subscribers and getting them invested in your product journey is super insightful. The way you've broken down the email sequence is not only methodical but also very user-centric. Your strategy of connecting with subscribers, sharing your personal journey, and then showcasing how your product can solve their problems is a great blueprint for anyone looking to launch a product. It's all about building trust and creating genuine connections, and you've nailed it!

I haven't thought about trying pre-orders before, but after reading your post, I'm seriously considering giving it a shot. Thanks for sharing your strategy and insights. It's posts like these that make communities so valuable.

Keep crushing it and looking forward to hearing more about your future successes! 🔥

May I ask which email service you're using?

    1. 1

We used Mailer lite and convertkit

  3. 2

Thanks Nithin, very insightful, I will using this for sure. Any suggestions on how to use email marketing on products which can't be preordered?

    1. 1

Can you share what type of product Ankit?

  4. 2

Nice work! Great approach. Out of interest, how big was the email list you sent to?

    1. 1

We had around 400 people in the waitlist and 900 subscribers to our newsletter when we did this.

  5. 2

    Hi Nithin,
A very nice flow, that I really want to implement.

Just curious, what type of email headings did you use? Did you do any A-B testing on it?

    1. 1

We used short headlines mostly 5 words or less.

Mail 1 headline: What is your biggest fear?

Mail 2 headline: How Product Hunt Changed Our Life 🕺

Mail 3 headline: One common pattern behind top launches 🕵️

Pre-order mail headline: Your invite to Product Hunt Workbook 🚀

We didn't A/B test, but all mails had about 40% open rate.

Great! I'm glad you found It helpful 😊

Hi, thanks for sharing! May I ask how you even get email subscribers in the first place before launching? Thank you!

    1. 1

We built a waitlist of email subscribers by doing a giveaway of free products that would be related to our paid product like " list of places to share your launch" on twitter, linkedin and Facebook groups.

That's the strategy we use to build our waitlist of email subscribers.

      1. 2

Could you go into a bit more detail? Did you already have followers on twitter/linkedin and which facebook groups did you post in?

I am very close to finishing my product but only have a handful of people which subscribed to my pre-launch mailing list.

My approach was to message people on Reddit who talked about a problem which my product aims to solve(mostly agency owners), but it takes a lot of work for not so much return.

        1. 1

Sure. Since the free product that we gaveaway was made in notion, we shared it all the notion groups where creators hang out like free notion templates group. That worked good for us.

We didn't have a big following on twitter and linkedin. Just about 1700, me and my Co-founder combined. But giveaway posts usually do good on social media if you give something useful to your audience even without a big following.

Giving away a part of your paid product for free is one of the best ways to build a waitlist.

      2. 2

Oh wow that's interesting! Really helpful to have an email list before a launch :)

        1. 1

I'm glad you found it helpful 😊

  7. 1

These are awesome tips, I've saved your post! We're not doing a pre-order, but I think most of these tips can be used on other types of businesses. We do have a waiting list and we'll try to engage with possible costumers in similar ways. Thanks!
