It's the 2nd of January, 2023 and my calendar is already full of work: a full time job, a big project for a client on the side and a mobile app. With all this work lined up, how I started searching for ways on how to manage it without going crazy.
I just recently finished reading the book BUILD by Tony Fadell and found very useful his method of organizing work. A TLDR; of the book is that you have a single place that holds all your plans, integrated all the feedback from the day to day work and have a way to overview everything when you need to do a planning session once a week. The book goes into every detail of the method but that's pretty much it.
At first I attempted to follow the method step by step but soon I realized that using a document for everything was not going to cut it for my case because he was working on a main project at a time and I had three. I attempted to use a note with todos and lists but it also felt short. The available tools out there, Trello & co, are built around teams and managers and hace completely forgotten about the individual that is doind the work. I'm the "manager" and "the worker" so I needed a tool that also helps manage the day to day details of the work.
With this management problem growing every week I decided that the only solution was to build a tool based on the principles taught in BUILD book and personal learnings and pereferences with the focus being individual that has to self manage and also do the day to day work.
The way they planner implements the method in the books is:
A weekly view that is an overview of the week with all your notes, projects and todos so you can perform
the necessary work.
A workspace page that has all the information for a project or a client in which you have an overview of all the scheduled projects in an easy to diggest Timeline, create Goals and Milestones for long projects, a simplified Kanban Board for all the Projects, have notes for your Responsibilities within that workspace and Board for all your notes.
A view called the "One Pager" in which you have a Timeline with every item schedule in every workspace you have configured and a simplified Kanban Board for the work that is currently going on.
Here you can see a list of all the feature the app has.
I have used this tool during 2023 and successfully achieved its original goal of helping me not go crazy and deliver on all the promises I have made at work and my clients.
