I’ve spent the last few months building Project Forward, an AI financial planner that predicts your bank balance 12 months into the future.
But I hit a massive wall: The "Compliance Floor."
In the UK, if you want to access live bank data (Open Banking), you need to be regulated by the FCA or be an agent of someone who is.
I went to the big providers (the ones powering Monzo/Revolut). Their quotes were insane for a pre-revenue indie hacker:
Setup fees: £1,500 - £15,000
Monthly minimums: £500-£2000
Day 1 Cash Requirement: ~£4,500 min
For a VC-backed startup, that’s change. For a bootstrapper, that’s a death sentence. I almost quit to build a "CSV Import" version instead, but I knew it would kill the user experience.
I stopped talking to the "Tier 1" providers and started hunting for Resellers and "Startup Tiers."
I found a partner willing to listen. I pitched them a "Ramp-Up" model:
I pay higher unit economics later (per user) in exchange for waiving the high fixed fees now.
I just closed a deal that gets me fully compliant and live for under £1,000 upfront.
What’s Next?
I’m currently integrating the API in the sandbox environment. I’m testing the AI reconciliation engine to ensure it can match "Pending" transactions against predicted bills in real-time.
I’m not opening signups just yet—I want the data feed to be bulletproof first.
I’ll be posting updates here as I wire up the AI. If you are building in Fintech and stuck on the compliance barrier, feel free to ask how I navigated it.
