How I use the "Good King" hack to write high-converting content

Hey, Chris here.

I know some of you break the neck and put a lot of effort into your website…

Especially when it comes to convert traffic into paid users.

So I decided it would be nice to share with you a couple of hacks I’ve learned helping software companies grow their product and increasing their conversions.

See, the #1 job of any SEO or content marketing campaigns isn’t to drive traffic.

Sure…this is also important

It’s actually to convert traffic into paid users.

There are many SEO gurus who claim to triple traffic and rank you in 90 days.

But tell me this…

Would you choose 10.000 visits per month with little to no conversions

Or 4.000 visits with 25% conversion rate?

Get yourself a cup of coffee because today I want to reveal my “Good King” hack.

And if you want to know why I named it like that - keep reading.

See, most SaaS companies waste big bucks and time on their content.

Missing the most important & fundamental values of Google, Facebook, and any social platfor out there.

And that’s providing value. Where’s value, there’s high engagements, wild conversions, and market influencing.

"What are you talking about, Chris?"

See, people are looking for information. They are searching for quick answers to their latest challenges. Your main job with your content is to provide value. In return, people will signup with your software. This is called the reciprocity rule. One of the six weapons of influence as stated by R.B. Cialdini.

Cialdini's “reciprocity” is the impulse we feel to return the favor after we are helped by someone or given value. That impulse not only inspires us to give back in equal measure but may in fact compel us to give back more value than we received in the first place.

It’s like being a good king. You listen to your people. You make their life easier. And they give you back their love and loyalty.

So let’s start with the first (out of 4) components of the “Good King” hack.

#1 Write articles like a doctor:

Start developing articles that answer user challenges. A really good place to start is answerthepublic.com website. It will give you back the most searched questions based on a keyword you feed in.

Next, you want to develop strong content. Don’t publish tons of articles per month. Just start slow, take time, and write a really good article – that would beat the competition and provide actual value. Your article needs to have the following components:

  • Story: start your article by writing a quick story that drives directly into action. Show your audience you understand their needs, their pains, and frustrations. Give them a reason to keep reading your article.

  • Discovery: write some short paragraphs about how they search online for a solution, and how they waste their time and effort on things that do not work. And finally – what they experience during this journey. You have to emphasize with them.

They need to listen to how you went through the same journey. They need to recall what they lost while searching for a solution. And how they are about to find one. I know this sound like a Lord of the Rings book.

But there is a reason why people read such books. There’s a Reluctant Hero journey component.

There’s storytelling. Please, don’t make your article another “Top 10 tools for project management” shit. I beg you. Because such articles will only frustrate even more your users.

Do you know why? Instead of showing them the exact solution, you just give them a list of 10 more possible things they have to research.

What the hell...

  • Solution: Finally, use a few paragraphs to tell how your software solves all of these challenges. Give them a reason to get started with you by providing a good deal and easy onboarding.

#2 Focus on guides:

Every article you want to get optimized for social or SEO needs to have an actual solution. Their titles have to address the question your traffic is searching for.

For example, if they search for “convert audio to text”, make sure your article title says something like:

“How to easily convert your podcast to a blog article in 3 steps without installing any additional software on your Mac”.

Turn your articles into small PDF guides and allow users to download them in exchange for their information.

These PDFs should stay simple. A couple of pages will be enough.

So, if you’re writing about “How to do X thing in Y simple steps”, make sure you create a small 2-page PDF with the exact steps (as a checklist) and allow readers to download it for free.

#3 Write good titles that increase your CTR and user signups:

No one would love to read about “Top 10 alternatives to X software”. Your article titles need to have the following formula:

Grab attention + Unique benefit + Burning curiosity

Remember, your title's #1 job is to sell the click.

Attention-grabbing headlines will x3 your CTR and increase the chances of converting readers into users. Poor headlines will only give you cheap traffic.

Save your marketing and SEO budget by providing killer titles.

#4 Media content will increase your SEO conversions:

Don’t just write a long article. Take time to record a small video and upload it to Youtube.

Ideally, as a tutorial or how-to guide. This will not only give you more real estate on Google search results but also allow readers to quickly watch and consume the info.

Remember: some users prefer watching a tutorial than reading a long article.

I know this sounds challenging for you.

But please do this.

I promise you’ll x3 the number of users coming from organic traffic.

Finally, DO NOT write tons of articles per month. Just write 2 articles and optimize them each month. It’s a lot easier to track the conversions on 2-3 articles/month. Plus, your content will be way more powerful because you will spend more time building it. Hope it make sense.

If you went though this post - jsut know…

You’re now that top 5% of world’s best software companies.

No joke!

Yes, it will take you a bit of time implementing it - but the results will smell fantastic!

And look, i don’t bite…

If you have questions - feel free to ask ;)

Cold outreach scales linearly - same effort per reply every week. It's necessary for early traction but the founders who get to $10k+ MRR almost always layer in a compounding channel underneath it. SEO, community, partnerships, or product-led growth.

What's the channel you're betting on to build independently of your outreach?

Thank you Chris for this amazing article!!

We are actually launching in November and we want to focus on content and SEO..

We are an Intercom alternative: Live video chat, screen sharing, cobrowsing and AI transcription for website and software.

So we will be mainly writing about sales techniques, qualification, conversion rates, reducing churn..

Do you think you can help us with that? Do you do any freelance SEO work?

    1. 1

Hate intercom! Let's start from here. Nothing personal but their pricing is f*** up.

People are looking heavily for alternatives. Last week I had 2 clients (Wisboo & TicketingHub) and they run on Intercom.

I can hop on a strategy call with you. For free of course. Send me an email (it's on my profile) and let me know when you can make it.

I believe your story is fascinating. Competition is tough.

But, this doesn't mean you can't beat it.

In fact, here's what I'd do:

      1. Spend 2-3 weeks or researching the market. You need to gather their emotions and most searched things. I use Facebook groups, YT comments, Quora, Reddit, forums...

You should end up here with 4 files:

      • A spreadsheet with common themes
      • A client avatar
      • A competitor audit spreadsheet
      • A features/benefits spreadsheet
      1. Don't allow third-party websites control your narrative. Most probably you'll need pages like reviews and alternatives. When someone searches for "Intercom reviews" or "Intercom alternatives" - you'll get results from Capterra, G2, and intercom itself.

Develop reviews and alternative pages. Control the narrative.

      1. Be omnipresent and use Google products to boost your authority. You probably saw a lot of Youtube videos (especially tutorials) that have a written blog post.

The reason is simple. When you do write a post, take time to make a 5 mins Youtube video. Google owns YT and they give high priority when it comes to videos. Just search for "how to connect GA4 to GTM". You'll see what I mean.

      This boost your page/article.

When people see a face - they tend to trust you better. Plus, this also increases the quality of your content and your authority.

Everyone wants to speak to an expert. Right?

      1. This leads me to the next hack. Your articles need to be guides. You probably saw how Hubspot make their articles:

      https://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/marketing-plan-template-generator?_ga=2.135990773.534527915.1664381532-1842873978.1660978225

Your article's theme should be around some steps or checklist. (ie. X ways to do Y things, How to do X things...)

Convert your article into a simple 3-5 pages PDF and allow people to download it.

Have a form that collects their info after the first paragraph, before the first step begin.

This allow you to convert traffic into prospects and increase the quality of your content.

      See how Hubspot did it.

      1. Finally, it's the way you find keywords. Don't hunt high volume keywords. Usually, these people are in the wrong stage. You want people that are aware of their problem and look for a solution. Hence, your keywords need to take advantage.

I usually go with SEMRush, Google suggest, Answerthepublic, Keyword Planner - when it comes to do my 4D keyword research.

      Hope these steps help you.

Looking forward to chat, my friend.

Thanks a lot for your insights!! your feedback is so constructive!

I will send you an email and let's take it from there :)
