👋🏻 Hi!
I'm Alex, founder of Nocodehackers, and I'm going to tell you how this project was born and how I validated the idea in a Weekend.
¡Hoping to be of value to someone!
I love creating digital products, and I've teaching Design Thinking for a while but not with my own project, so I decided that was time for putting on practice all that knowledge that I've acquired over the years.
First, I focused on the problem, and for that I had to create an hypothesis about who my user was. I've been exploring the #nocode world for almost a year, so I decided that it had to exist more people interested in this world.
With that I mind, I did my personas to try to recap all the info that I've recollected in my own experience with the #nocode world and using it in my workplace.
My customer persona is "Juan", a 30 years designer that loves technology and works in a small agency. He loves trying new things and is always developing new ways of doing things with less work. He has heard about the nocode movement and tried a couple of apps, but never dedicated time to learn.
While I was doing the research, I saw that although the community in english is vast and grown, in spanish it is not fully developed. So with that in mind and having always wanted to develop a online course platform, I settled in the #nocode courses in spanish.
But to develop the courses, it would consume a lot of time and maybe I'm wrong and nobody wants them. ¡I had so many things that I wanted to teach! So I decided that I would do a Free intro course on the tool that I'm most proficient: Airtable.
A course that would take me not more than a morning to plan and build. And that's what I did the Friday morning. I've created a short intro course to Airtable, showcasing the basic funcionalities with a real life example.
Now, I had to plan how to validate my hypothesis:
"There's people interested in learning NoCode in spanish, and the would pay for it".
And if anything I've learned is that to validate a idea, you should spend as less time and money as possible. So that's why I did it for free.
I did a Landing page in Webflow (https://nocodehackers.es), and chose Thinkific as my course platform, since it allowed me to have up to 3 free courses and handled all the user info.
I spent the majority of the Friday and Saturday to develop the M.V.P., in total no more than 8 hours. And then I decided to test with my (small) Twitter audience if they would like the project.
For a while nobody signed up. But steadily, some people started joining and praising on the quality of the course. In total, 17 people registered that day.
🙌 ¡ Yay !
But then, it was only a free course.
And people love free stuff. But, ¿will they pay for it?
So that's why, amongst the people that did the course, I emailed every single one of them , and offered them a more advanced course on Airtable, treating more complex things like blocks, formulas and integratios.
But of course, the course wasn't ready, so I offered them a deal. If they bought the course right now, they will get the content for only. 5$, from a 29$ that will be the final result of the course.
Of those 17, 5 of them bought the course, and I decided that I would focus myself on building that course.
2 months later, I have more than 130 students, and grossed <1k $ on the courses, so I'm pretty happy of the results and having spent 40€ in building the project (in total up to today).
Now i continue creating things in my project: https://nocodehackers.es and I write about No-code news in my newsletter: https://nocodehackers.substack.com
¡Thanks for reading! Hope it helps to anyone trying to validate their next idea.
Sounds like a textbook idea validation example! Congrats.
I’m interested in how you got to the persona. Was that based off experience or customer interviews?
¡Yeah! Kinda following all the right steps that the theory mandates.
To build the persona I based it in some conversations that I've recently had with two friends of mine who are freelancers, and use Airtable for their work. Also a kind of personal experience since I use Airtable for practically everything and in my work people seem interested but didn't really know how to use it to its fullest potential.
I have the persona profile explicitly but it is in spanish, if you want to see it just let me know.
Hi Thanks for that. No need to seen the profile, I am just interested in the process. Nice work.
Alex this is amazing! I literally came on this group to ask about people’s ideas and validation and this is so good.
A few questions:
Your webflow landing page is beautiful - was that free to make?
Can I ask where your profile pic doodle/animation is from? I’ve been looking for something similar for a while and love it!
If you didn’t promote your product on twitter, where would you have done so? (I have no twitter currently and when I do it’ll be a very small group most likely)
Thanks so much for sharing I’m super pumped to start and validate my idea ✨
Hi there! Thanks for the questions, really interesting.
The webflow template was free, i designed it myself. After validation i invested on the webflow plan to expand the capabilites, but not before paying for it with the customers payments.
The doodle is from Pablo Stanley's Open Peeps: https://www.openpeeps.com/ :D
I had no twitter until that moment, just 100 followers and mainly friends on the ecosystem. It happened to be people interested in the topic. I would suggest whichever medium you have available, Linkedin, your contacts or your friends, You don't need a massive amount of people to receive feedback.
Trying here on Indiehackers could be a good idea as well.
Best of luck with your idea! Hope any of this helps.
It's taken me so long to find a doodle maker and now here's a whole library! Also, that's smart to do with Webflow and pay for it only when you make the money back. As for the social media that's a great idea better to have a small group of targeted individuals than lots who bring no value.
Muchas Gracias for all your help Alex :)
Which did you write down first - the persona or the hypothesis? Which one was "finished" first? Congrats.
I definitely started with the persona in mind, because it comes from conversations with friends that fit in that persona, and was thinking the whole time that if people like them saw the potential, more people probably will see it too.
This is just impressive. Keep doing cool thing! @Vaughtton
#nocode big fan too. Are we connected on Twitter already? Let's start a conversation, here's mine!
¡Just followed and DM'd you! :D
Love the support of the #nocode community. Thanks for the comment.
Sounds great, thanks for sharing!
As I do not speak Spanish, what exactly do you teach, the tools (webflow etc.) or how to build a business with the tools?
¡Thanks for your comment!
I focus on the tools, but I explain every concept based on real use cases, like for example using Airtable as a Webflow backend for a blog. But each course is built to teach you how to use the tool to the fullest potential, which some times involves other tools like Integromat, Zapier, Webflow....
Nice, sounds cool!
What a great case study on how to validate an idea- awesome!
¡Thanks!
Really tried to follow the process and don't build without real validation (a.k.a. paying customers!)
Great work. Very inspiring. Thanks and good luck 😊
¡Thanks for your comment! Glad it can be helpful :)
Keep up the good work Alex! Spanish speakers need a no-code community to help each other
¡Thank you! Trying to do that, there's a lot of gap in the spanish content about nocode, the more people trying, the better.
