How important is it to trademark your startup in the U.S?

I know that as indie hackers, when we think of an idea, we think of getting a domain name first, lol. After spending time building for a while, we then proceed to register the startup. But that's where most of the legal stuff ends.

Why doesn't anyone think of trademarks? Is it cost? Procedure?
