As we reach the end of the year, I thought I'd share an overview of how I've worked with founders and Indie Hackers to review their year (I offered a complimentary reflection session via Twitter and LinkedIn)
No single way is right or wrong. The session was the start of the reflection process. Your thoughts will continue when you're in the shower, on the toilet and out for a walk. That's ok - take the time to process them and do what's right for you.
I've shared the questions I used below, but the key was digging deep on each point and not accepting a surface level answer.
For example: you may have made X decision... but dig deeper... what was the outcome? Are you proud of making that decision (regardless of the outcome)? What have you learnt for next time? What information would have helped you to take a different perspective at the time?
There's no need to torture yourself with the process. Make it as easy and as enjoyable as possible. This isn't punishment for how things may have turned out. Kick back, think things through and document them.
It's often helpful to verbalise what we're thinking - have you got a business partner, friend, life partner, pet (!) that you could talk through what you're thinking?
When you started this year, what were you hoping would happen and how did that turn out?
What decisions did you make that you’re not proud of?
What decisions are you proud of?
Tell me about someone who helped you or you helped this year?
What was most draining? Will that change next year?
Overall are you in a better position now than you were in January 2020?
If this year repeated, would you be happy in 12 months time?
What could you do in the remaining weeks of 2020 that would set you up for 2021?
What’s your single biggest priority next year? Why? What do you need to do to get it done?
How are you going to make change next year?
What are you going to stop next year?
Let me know if you have any questions below, otherwise wishing you an exciting 2021!
Thanks for the framworks! I wouldn't want 2020 to happen again, no. Lots of blessings on my side. But I can't wait for the start of the second decade to be over.
Thanks Julian - excited to see how 2021 progresses for you! 🙌🏽
Nice post, Stefan. I'm a BIG fan of reflection and setting goals.
I'm looking forward to reading through my 2020 journal, it'll be interesting to say the least! Then it's time to set some ambitious 2021 goals.
How was your 2020?
Thanks Liam!
Good to hear you're a big fan of reflection/goal setting too. It sounds like you've been reflecting as you go, throughout the year. Do you have any end of year routine other than reading back and goal setting?
My 2020 was good thanks, generally speaking - certainly didn't end how I expected it to... working on something completely different but I'm glad I made the decision to look at what my values are and what my strengths are and pulled them together into a service.
In my own reflection I described this year as lots of experimentation and I'm hoping that next year is focused on execution and growth.
How about you? Did 2020 go ok? Any highlights?
Well this is something I've only started in 2020, so it's a new process for me.
I want to see how I developed over the year and drill down into certain thoughts/feelings. One thing I'm excited to do, is to reflect on times I've felt down or anxious and ask: was it really that big of a deal after all?
Great to hear your year was good, I love the TalkToStefan initiative.
2020 was a big year for me. I made a massive career/personal decision in Nov 2019; the result has been the biggest year, in terms of growth, I've ever had.
I'm more self-aware, focused, and ultimately grateful!
Excellent, I hope drilling down works well for you!
Thanks for your kind words on Talk to Stefan!
Wow - it's been a challenging year for so many but it sounds like you've had some great personal outcomes.
Wishing you well for 2021!
