How long did it take you to get your first 10 paying customers?

I often read stories of how Saas founders got their first 1,000 or first 100 paying customers.

Although I find it useful, I'm more curious about how you got your first 10 paying customers because is imo the most difficult step, or at least the first big challenge.

The majority don't get to that point. So if you did, please share your story here.

I'd love to hear it!

For B2B SAAS project, we obtained 10 paying customers in no time because it's quite straightforward. You just cold called potential customers by email. However, for our B2C community project it's a nightmare. We got over 1k users in a half a year by posting into groups, forums, reaching out and etc., but 0 paying customers so far.

So I guess it depends the product you have, market you target, and on many other factors. There's no right or wrong answer. It can take someone 1 month or 5 years and that's totally fine :)

That's a very good point, AivarasAz. The market you are in matters.

Just out of curiosity, what's the name of your B2B Saas project?

Unfortunately not a success story, but a story nonetheless.

Years ago I built an Edutech B2B SaaS; the method I used to get the first (and only) customer was approaching the university I attended. Luckily a couple of the lecturers were open to testing it. Lesson: Existing network.

What about customer retention after sign-ups?

Most businesses have high customer churn, which means they are losing their valuable customers; there are many reasons for that:

    • High Price
    • Low Quality
    • Poor Service
    • No need for further
    • Lack of tool knowledge
    • Complicated process
    • Extra charges

If you're facing this issue for your product, then you can try Churnfree a customer retention tool that can save up to 46% of your customer churned requests.

Enjoy the 14 days free trail of churnfree.com; no card is required for sign up!

      Nice blatant advertising

Consistenly creating and sharing product/articles across all channels, and users finally gradually came. It's a long game.

Hey! Which channels did you use/ which ones did you find had the best return? Also what kind of software was it?

  5. 1

It took about a month but it was in 2003. Submitting the product to download sites was enough back then.

    I know the feeling :)

My project is called AI2sql, and it's a mysql query builder
tool that allows software developers or non-developers to easily generate SQL queries. It took me about 12 months to get my first 10 paying customers, but after 2 months I'd reached 40 paying customers—it's like a real roller coaster!

I used different marketing channels to get my first customers: Twitter, Build in Public, Reddit, PH, IH, etc. :)

We got the first 10 paying customers in a couple of months.

First 5-10 paying customers shouldn't be a problem if you are already in the market and started announcing before launching.

I had people ready to buy, my first Saas was related to customer engagement analytics for e-comm. 1 big client started giving a decent revenue to run my expenses

It took us a year for an authentication platform. We tried running the content strategy and got most of customers from the blog channel.

Yeah I can totally relate, Ryan. I have a few free signups at the moment for my project but not the traction yet to think about how to get the first 100 or even 1000 paying customers.

Though for me it's probably just a time-thing cause I didn't do a "big launch" and integrated payment just a few days ago.

One thing I've heard consistently is to validate your idea before you build something. Have people ready who have paid you already or showed some great amount of concern about the problem you are trying to solve.

Hey Ryan, getting the 1st set of customers is quite difficult as the product is new to the market. So many founders may consider running a lifetime deal campaign in a marketplace.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I've seen a few promoting there upd there.

Apart from AppSumo which other similar marketplaces do you?

      1. 2

You can consider platforms like Stacksocial, SaasPirate, Dealmirror, Pinchground, and Dealify.

          Excellent. Thanks for the resources!
