How many hours do you typically work a day?

Sharing how we work can help other indie hackers be inspired on how to (or how not to) structure their days.

How many hours do you typical work a day, or per week?

Is there anything in particular that helps you find the structure you need as an individual?

I work 8 hours a day on my day-to-day job and then 1 to 3 hours in my project.

  2. 5

Getting close to 12 hours these days. Trying hard to get the mvp out.

Currently I am working from home on my userTrack analytics project.

I can't maintain a constant working schedule, it can vary anywhere from 0 to 12 hours a day, but I usually work one day about 4 hours (really intense/productive) and then 0-2 hours the next day. By doing this I avoid getting burned out and I manage to do in those 4 intense hours more work than I would in 3 days of normal 8hours/day non-efficient work. I don't think you can work really focused and efficient for more than 3-4 hours a day.

Work from 5AM - 8AM on my own stuff, go to the gym, and then go to work at 10AM.

So 3 hours on week days and about 5 hours on the weekend.

    25 hours per week.

How do you maintain the discipline to wake up at 5 AM everyday ?

      1. 4

Basically by working a full time job and thinking every day that I want to work for myself.

Impressive. You should do a write-up on that. I believe success is mostly about discipline/focus and hardwork over a period of time.

I'm in my home office by 9am every day. I usually spend a couple hours in the afternoon doing something else... lunch, yard work, laundry, cleaning, etc. I'll take a nap if I'm sleepy. Then I work until dinner, and the rest of the evening is for relaxing (go for a walk, hang out with friends, read, watch a movie, etc). Generally I'm working 8 hours per day.

Sometimes I'll have an idea or feel inspired by something and end up working 12 hours straight. I believe in taking advantage of that inspiration when it strikes. ;) Likewise there are days when I don't feel inspired at all, so I'll take the day off and go for a hike or skiing, work on a drawing (I'm learning), etc. I figure it's good to listen to your mind and body, and a huge benefit of working on your own project is that you aren't forced to stick to anyone else's schedule.

In general I'm probably working around 40 hours per week, although I don't keep track of it.

around 8 hours at my day job and then around 5-6 when I get home. This is unless I have plans to go out and hang out with friends/family.

Oftentimes, as many as it takes.

    1. 1

there's still an upper limit of 24 hours in a day.

  10. 1

5 to 6 hours daily on my side projects after 6 hours of day job.
Trying to perform at least 40 hours weekly on side but being a dada for 5 months girl isn't easy.

  11. 1

I don't have a day job so I am typically up by 7 am and in bed by midnight and approx 80-90% of that time is working. The rest of the time is eating, napping and dedicated learning

  12. 1

    I work 5 hours a day in 2 slots - 3hr (11 AM to 2 PM),2hr (3 PM - 5 PM)

  13. 1

During the build/launch phase of my SaaS, probably about 10 hours per day, but now that we are cruising along and growing steadily, about 4 to 6 hours per day. Some days I don't work at all and spend time on other hobbies and things.

I've been working on MakerList lately so my schedule has been...

    • 8hrs at my day job
    • 3-5hrs on side projects (3-4 days during the week)
    • 14 hrs between Saturday and Sunday

All said and done I work probably about 30hrs a week on top of the 40hrs from my day job when I'm gunning for something.

  15. 1

For the last 3 months I've been self employed and working on a personal project. I've been working about 5-6 hours a day. I usually start around 5:00 am so I get about 3 hours with no distractions before everyone wakes up and the city starts to get noisy.

I feel I've been way more productive working 5am-12pm than 8am-5pm so I really enjoy waking up that early.

So far all good. Some days I work more hours but those are rare. I think I've been pretty good at stopping so I avoid getting crazy and burned out and that has helped my productivity.

Also, if you wake up at 5am make sure to take a shower right after you get out of bed so you don't start sleepy. I don't drink coffee so I need something else to wake me up.

  16. 1

I consult usually bill 10 hours a day on weekdays and 5 hours on weekend days. On top of that I probably spend 5 to 10 hours a week on my side projects and products.

For me, routine is key. I get up around the same time every day. And I go to the gym at the same time 7 days a week without fail. I go to bed at the same time every day, too. I just feel so much more productive when I take take of myself first.

  17. 1

I start at 8 from my bed googling a reading news, after 9 I decided to get up and reading emails or reply until 11, then I have some call or meeting, in the afternoon I do the deep work and during the night If I need I work on even harder things just because I don't get distracted by any email campaign or notification.

  18. 1

Id' say 8 - 10 hours. If I have deadlines then it will be over the weekend as well. Other times I just need to switch off which means no work after 8.30pm. I think however it's less about the physical hours and more about the productivity. My day starts with riding my bike into work, coffee and then work.

  19. 1

I work as much as possible. I want to get as much done as I can.

  20. 1

I work between 12 and 20 hours a week currently. But building my product was about 500 hours in 4–6 months. Now I just need to recruit affiliates and promote the occasional sale.

  21. 1

9 - 5 at my corporate job, when I'm doing development a few hours in the evenings and about 12 hours over the weekend. When I'm just running the business - 10 seconds a day checking my email to see my server status. My goal is to reduce this to carrying a phone to get alerts from AWS if something happens. Take the 4 hour work week to a whole nother level.

  22. 1

I work best from 8am to noon and then again from 8pm to 11:30pm. After lunch I slow down a bit so usually use that time from noon to 3pm to answer emails and other non-mind intensive tasks or go for a walk, go to gym, take a cat nap, etc. I went full time entrepreneur so I end up working a lot of hours, but I am still able to carve out me time and family time.

  23. 1

I work full time at a pretty high-paced start up. I try to stick to a normal work day of 9am to 6pm, but it's not terribly uncommon for that 6pm to turn into 8 or 9. I'm also really passionate about making my own projects though and being that my nights are unpredictable, I wake up at 5am so I can get a few hours of personal work in before the work day starts.

In total that is basically a 5am - 6pm end-to-end work day. It's a long day, but the habit of investing time into my own work has become habitual to the point that I feel guilty if I don't do it.

  24. 1

I work full-time from 9-5 daily then dinner + gym. After the gym I squeeze in 1 to 2 hours a night on personal projects.

  25. 1

9 to 5 basically with a cheeky half hour at lunchtime. Try to stick the same routine every day and I know once 5 comes I'm due me time. Exercising hard first thing helps settle my mind and body, I feel ready to tackle problems after a nice swim. I personally seem to respond well to routine and structure but I appreciate that doesn't work for everyone.

  26. 1

I work on my day job every weekday from 06:00 to about 14:30. Then I go pick up my son from daycare. At the evening I work usually from 20:00 to 22.30. On saturdays I work from 09:00 to about 17:00. Sundays I’m usually off.

There are hours here and there I miss or do extra, but this is generally my schedule 🙂
