I probably have developed about 50 web apps over 10 years before actually making my latest idea ReadyPage.me actual work. How about you?
I'm on #4 now, still haven't made it yet, lol. I don't count them as failures though, I feel like I learn something every time (in terms of running a business, not just tech knowledge). 50 is a humbling number to hear.
What's the one piece of advice you would give to the "past you" starting off?
Edit: My most recent advice to my past self is that B2C is really really hard and don't get into an area you don't have some subject matter experience in
#4 represent 🙌 - You nailed it on the head, each one has been such a learning experience that I don't see mine as failures either. My first app took me 6 months to develop, the second took 3 months and my third 2 months. You can see how the trend is going :) Currently working on #4 but doing additional market research this time round. Best of luck!
Hah, I'm doing market research for the first time too. Only took me 3 failures to get tired of building things that didn't stick
Trust me I have NOT made it yet either! I am still learning.
I would tell my past self: Keep it simple and allow that simplicity to be your strength.
This is good advice :)
One. Definitely striking some sort of precious metal - not sure it's gold yet.
Producing something that I needed myself was a good start - guaranteed at least one customer.
If I count the number of domains I bought thinking this will be THE project, around 50!
Of course, not all the previous domains were complete failure. I got some traction on some of them, others never saw the light at all. But I was motivated enough to actually pay for 50 domain before one started making revenue.
After that, I still bought 30 others domains, and in these, 5 of these are related to project making revenues (note: That's different than 5 projects making revenues! One project can have multiple domains).
I swear after another few years of a hard slog I should become an overnight success. haha.
Pebbled.io has been around for a few years now but faark it's a tough slog and never ending drama + likely just attracts the wrong clients, I do have 2 web apps I'm building currently which SHOULD take me out of the design / web dev game. I mean, I'm making a decent living but stress levels are through the roof and the anxiety is probably going to end up killing me unless I get something else going.
All up I've spent about 15 years failing but got something now that's at least making me bank, but... fuck me it's hard and I can't wait to deploy something else which doesn't have clients demanding a bottom of the barrel price for a high quality product.
I'm going to start on idea #2 today. Haven't made it yet LOL. Slow internet and not enough time has been a bottleneck for idea #1 LOL
Those bottlenecks are for my sister, the illustrator LOL. So I'm going to do idea #2 which I can do myself 😂
