FYI, I graduated with a Mechanical Engineering Tech degree.
Now I'm in the marketing, video editing, and sneaker art arena.
As soon as I went into job interviews for engineering, I realized that university taught me jack 💩.
But, they smothered the love of engineering out of me by sophomore year. 😒🤷🏾♀️
Even though I did, finally, get a few engineering jobs - they were the worst.
Places where souls go to die.
Roller coaster loop-de-loops later - I'm here.
And a lot happier.
One day I hope to get back to engineering - but my way (of course). 😏

From everyone I talked to - you're one of the rare ones.
I graduated as an Electronic Engineer with a specialization in Software engineering for embedded systems. I was already working as a programmer before that, and am still programming today :)
Before that I went to uni for classical piano though, but I dropped out after having gone over half of it. It's been 10 years, I never used that knowledge for anything since and I basically forgot how to play the piano, but Id still like to learn again one day.
You and Rosie are in the same boat - as in, you all picked right the first time.
I've talked to so many others where that DEFINITELY wasn't the case.
I think most people are too young to know what they really want to do when they first go to uni. I was 23 when I started engineering school, so I think that gave me an advantage.
Well, especially back in my day - I knew EXACTLY what I wanted to do.
I wanted to be a backup dancer for Janet Jackson.
Seriously.
But you say that out loud, and people close to you say, "No" or "that's a terrible idea" or "have a backup plan", you know?
And without the proper resources, structure, and PLANNING - yeah, it was a pipe dream.
NOW - with all the online resources, me having taste tested different avenues & career paths, and being MUCH better at planning - anything and everything is possible.
I believe that kids, as early as middle school should be asked, "What do you want to be NOW"?
And whatever they say they want to do, cool!
Let's have you shadow a person for a week that does this so you have an understanding of what the day-to-day is like.
If you don't like it, cool.
You can try something else.

From talking with so many people about this, it's a shame that we don't REALLY think about what we want to do until junior/senior year of high school.
And then we go into uni, blindly following the plan. And then when we get out - it's nothing like we imagined.
So we have to start all over again, but this time - with debt wrapped around our neck like an anchor.
I have recently got my degree in Finances and Audit, but it was so hard for me to combine work with a study. Not sure if it was worth all my efforts.
