before helping jump start Indie Hackers i landed a really swanky consulting gig doing front-end dev work. the equivalent of about $120k/yr for ~5–10 hours of work per week. fully remote.
how did i land this gig? by building flexbox defense, a web app that teaches you some CSS skills in the form of a tower-defense game. after i launched on hacker news and elsewhere, i got tons of inbound job requests and got to sit back comfortably and choose the one i wanted most.
My blog, StackOverflow account, and open source contributions have all been instrumental in landing jobs and consulting gigs.
I recall the first time that the hiring manager mentioned my blog, and during the same process told me that one of my would-be coworkers knew me from StackOverflow. That was 2016.
Since then, it's only become more common. I got a job a couple years ago via an email that went like this: "We use your open-source library in production. Would you like to work for us?" And I've had several other smaller gigs or opportunities find me through StackOverflow or my other online profiles.
This is awesome. Do you think this strategy mostly works for technical skills? Any fields where it has a higher / lower likelihood of success?
This is a good question. Tech skills can be scaled easier. Marketing info can be scaled via YouTube as an example but does it translate to offers... ?
