How much do you pay for your domain(s)?
I'm about to start a new project and the domain that I want is $70. While that's not an enormous amount for an investment, I was wondering what the norm is for everyone else's domain spending habits.
- How much do you spend in total for all of your domains?
- What is the most you've spent for a single domain?
I paid $10 for bannerbear.com which is now my full time business.
A couple of years ago I paid around $2000 for techjobsasia.com which I thought was going to pRiNt MoNeY.
Narrator: it didn't. (the project is now shut down)
Around that same time I was in "idea hunting mode" like many of us I'm sure have been through and I was registering domains like crazy. I probably have about 50 or so domains just sitting in my namecheap.com account.

After pondering pretty much all day, I went ahead and bought the domain. I feel good about the purchase.

The most I paid is $15 for openstartup.dev. Mostly I buy .com domain from namecheap for around $9.
I don't believe buying a premium parked domain has anything to do with your product. If the product is good, it will work and you can always buy the domain once you have made enough money from your product. Its my opinion and I may be wrong.
Agree with this, i've paid between $10-25 for my domains and i figure that i'll only need to think about a premium domain if my startup takes off, in which case its a problem for when the startup has some actual cash. Plus, it's incresingly common to not need a .com (twitch.tv being one example)
The domain may have SEO value if the domain is still hosting well back-linked content and you can take advantage of the incoming links and traffic.
Quite interesting, is there a way or website to find all such kind of domains.

I paid USD280 for frontfigure.com. Don't know if it was a smart move or not tbh.
I could have only gone for frontfigures.com for USD10 (which I also bought).
I just thought I got a discount from the software house from a friend and free branding from another friend so I just went for it.
I know that feeling- bought domain, then bought a similar to make the TLD part of the name. Not that I have the free time to stick anything in there currently!
I paid a little under $1K for the .com of our brand name. The person actually wanted $4K+ but one of our users negotiated it for us :)
Wow, one of your users negotiated for you? That's the first time I've ever heard anything like that. Could you elaborate?
He apparently used to do it a lot at his old job. Actually he did it without asking us, just went ahead, checked it out, and then let us know we could choose to buy it if we wanted to. Was super nice!
That said, migrating from our .io to .com was a pain. Even with all the correct redirects, Google still hasn't dropped .io from the index. It causes our search console reports to be funky, and we can't use the domain migration tool anymore because our canonical structure has changed.

Yeah that's the one. I can't run it anymore because the url formats don't match, since i changed how trailing slashes are done. It's irritating.
I did this back in April so it really should be updated by now (all the 301 redirects are in place).
Anyways, still glad we did it.

I own 25 domains. It is 25 * 9 (EUR/AVG) = 225 EUR/year.
My most expensive domain was vua.la 38 EUR/year. Which was related to my project from 2011 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JcH62we2SqQ but I canceled it after one year :)
I never paid more than the standard price for the domain because from my point of view it has no value. I think that the value of the domain is related to their content/project.
I will rather change the name of the project than pay for the domain.

I have paid $200 for a domain and sold a domain for $10k+ so the domain, so the market is wild.
I once paid $2500 for mybestshot.com. Project went nowhere, still own the domain.
All my other domains where available so cost around $10
I'd be willing to spend as much as is necessary if the domain gives you an advantage or creates a sense of established brand in your industry. There is VALUE in that and it's worth a lot depending on the industry.
My yearly cost for domains in my portfolio is over $5,000.
The most I've ever spent is $60,000 for a domain.
This month, I've spent over $8,000 on domains.
I've bought/sold over $500,000 in domains.
And I wouldn't consider myself a 'domainer' :P
I just bought intellifox.com for 1900$ (1600€). I had mixed feelings about this but went ahead because the project provided me with such cash to spend and it looked like the right decision for my ambition (conquering the world, of course).
I would never have done this with the initial funding too early in the life of the project.

I'd say grab it before someone else does. $70 is nothing. Be aware of the fact that "available domain checkers" often log what users check on their websites and register most attractive domains, just to flip them.
It's not unusual to pay over 1k USD for a domain, since most of the best ones are taken.
Consider some alternative extensions, like .space, .network, .agency or dozens of others.
I have like 25 domains.. The costly ones are the .io and .ink domains around $30 each.
Most of my domains simply sit and wait for their turn..

That's not to say you can't buy a name if you think it's worth it, I just didn't yet have the situation...
But sometimes buying domains even for 10k's$ could be ok...
The question is if it's integral to the business... Consider it a marketing/PR cost, would you have invested it? would putting that into another avenue pay off more?
Also I'd look at yearly vs buying it off... there are some crazy domains at 199$/year that's just the TLD terms, not buying it off 2nd market. Or some TLD's have special requirements that people put money into...
Some domains still have value , like .com domains. you will not find a domain
word.com or word1word2.com under the 200 USD. 70 USD is not expensive in my opinion , if that person registered it years ago it will be a very light premium over what he payed to maintain it. Be careful with some spammy tlds like .XYZ they have little value
