Here are a few ideas for writing a post about your startup journey:
During the fuel crisis in Hungary early last December, there was panic and a shortage of fuel. Many filling stations had run out of fuel and there were long lines at those that were still operating. While having dinner, I received a message from my sister joking that I should build an app to help people find fuel. I began working on a prototype at 8 PM on Monday and completed a functional version by 2 AM. I released it, wrote a quick post on Reddit, and went to sleep.
The site was simple, just a map of Hungary's fuel stations with an option for users to signal if there was available fuel at a particular station or not. When I woke up, I checked Google Analytics and saw that 1,000 people were using the app in the last 30 minutes. I knew I had something useful on my hands. Due to the short development time, my next task was to fix the obvious bugs. The site was functioning but there were lost entries and inaccurate calculations. I also had to add some abuse prevention measures as there was a chance that one malicious user could compromise the whole site. I spent a lot of time adding new petrol stations and listening to user feedback. I had to use different scraping techniques to build the map due to the absence of an official fuel station map.
The site was first featured on a popular automotive website, vezess.hu. Later in the day, articles about it appeared on Hungary's most visited news websites like hvg.hu and index.hu. The peak traffic was around 10,000 users in 30 minutes during the afternoon when most people were searching for available fuel after work. I'm not sure of the exact numbers, but I hope that many of those people found the website helpful.
In the evening of the day, the Hungarian government canceled the price cap in order to solve the fuel shortage situation. This was a relief for people, but it also meant that my site lost relevancy quickly. I received a lot of feedback from users suggesting transforming the website into a fuel price search tool, so I decided to do so. I worked on the SEO of the site and it seems to have good potential with this new functionality as well.
