How not to engage on Reddit

As I'm working on my project, I try to validate my idea. So I asked on Reddit if people use SSH to access their home server.

That worked very well. Within no time at all, I had 500+ comments and more than 350 upvotes. It is fascinating to read what people are using. Big hit!

I figured that if I analyzed the results, I could also make it into a blog post and re-post that on Reddit.
The post I made on Reddit only contained two sentences and a link to my blog.

I ran it past the mods given the community guidelines, and they gave me the thumbs up.

The re-post fell flat on its face. While there were no negative comments, it got downvoted significantly. Presumably, because it was seen as product placement. Which it was, of course.

Lessons learned. Next time I'll re-post the entire content of my blog post in a Reddit post and see how that goes.

Good luck, but make sure that even the whole blog post is not too promotional. I've experienced a similar thing as well, Reddit really dislikes self-promotion.

I think I was really careful not to do that. In fact, I would dislike reading something like that on Reddit too.
What do you think? If I had posted this: https://disknotifier.com/blog-post-reddit-question.html verbatim to Reddit, I think that would have been fine.

Honestly, I can't say. I'm never in the clear with Reddit, it seems to me that it boils down to how moderators interpret the subreddit's rules.

Haha, welcome to the "Reddit for founders"!
