How passion led me to tackle an untapped market for developers

Hi everyone!

The amount of knowledge & experience in this forum is truly empowering - and the comments I've seen so far extremely valuable! That's why I shout out to all of you today to share your opinion about geek canteen (http://www.geekcanteen.com/)!

Here we go:
My husband is extremely busy. Having just founded a company and leading a team as CTO, his schedule is pretty tight. So quite often he ends up ordering pizzas and other junk, because he's not sure how and what to cook that's quick and healthy. So once he asked: You're such a passionate chef, why don't you create something for people like me?

That's how HEALTHY BYTES by geek canteen was born: Tasty & healthy brainfood that's quick & easy to make, explained step-by-step in short, fun 1-2 minute videos. No fancy, funky ingredients, but simple things that are available in (hopefully!) every online grocery delivery.

How it will work:
STEP 1 (now): Subscribe to geek canteen. Receive video recipes & shopping lists.

STEP 2 (future): Download the geek canteen app. Specify the amount of time you have for cooking, dietary restrictions, food preferences & a subscription mode (daily/weekly/customized). Receive shopping list, written recipe, video recipe, information about calories and much more based on the selected categories!

I'm curious what you think? Is this something you'd use, try or recommend to a busy developer/entrepreneur? You can also watch an example video on http://www.geekcanteen.com/

The fun thing is, when you search on YouTube or Google for food for developers, there's nothing. This literally is a market still uncovered at least in the form proposed :) And now, be nice but honest.. haha.. looking forward to your feedback!

This is cool, I hate cooking (well mostly I hate thinking about what to cook) so this could be very helpful.

Is it only snacks or dinner as well? I don't mind if my snacks are unhealthy, that's kind of a given for me. But dinner should be healthy :)

You advertise it as "food for developers" but isn't it really "foor for busy people" ? That's a broader market atleast.

One opportunity I see here is being able to instantly order the ingredients. That might be possible through Prime? I don't live in the US so I'm not sure. Being able to order AND create (and its healthy) easily would be awesome.

    Good luck!

Hey Chris! Thank you so much for your feedback! It's great to hear that this could be useful to you!

I guess I chose 'food for developers' just to start and excel in a small niche before scaling to 'busier people', but you're absolutely right. The market itself for this product goes far beyond developers, which is also kind of exciting :) There are lots of busy people out there.. haha.. Do you think, it should start with the bigger target group instead?

In terms of ordering, I was thinking about setting up an affiliate program. Is there i.e. any other grocery delivery in your area/country that I could consider talking to just in case Amazon Prime Now doesn't work?

      Cheers

I'm not really sure what options there are for that. Some supermarket chains here experiment with delivery but nothing that can be automated by a third party I think.
Probably Prime is a good choice for starting.

Starting with a small audience is probably smart, so you can get everything running smoothly before focusing on scaling which is a whole other story than starting.

I do see some other businesses that offer something similar, but mostly I find blog articles with easy meals. So you might be in a good niche (that will probably grow).
Try to find out what others are doing and how you can be different (and better). I like your short and simple movies, that could be a good focus point.

Like the idea and congrats on launching!

    Some feedback.

I don't like the music. Feels overused (even though I have never heard it before).
Cutting to the picture then back to the video is jarring. Just put the text over the video, less jarring and could even speed up the videos.

    Good luck!
