My goal in 2020 is to relocate to Canada from Africa. Can I register my business in Canada and employ myself? What's the best way to go about this?
I'm not a lawyer so please validate / get more information.
To register a company in Canada, the main administrator (51% of equity) should be a Canadian citizen.
Depending on the province where you'll want to settle, I'm in Quebec for instance, you can incorporate a Quebec inc. or go with a Canada inc. The difference is in the taxes, since I'm based in Quebec my company employ myself as a real employee and I pay Quebec and Canada taxes for transactions that are made in Canadian territories.
You can either register a company via a lawyer or a CPA, it usually cost around 1.5k. And your annual revision for end of year and taxes is also in that range "depending on the size of your paper work".
Hope that help a bit. By the way it was -15 C couple of days in Quebec, which might be surprising compare to Africa ;)
FWIW the Canadian govt's "Corporations Canada" has some pretty straightforward instructions for completing this work online. As mentioned by @dstpierre, you should always validate and speak w/ a lawyer who specializes in this work if you have any reservations.
