How productive meetups/conferences are for networking/knowledge?
by
Manoj Singh
What is your core motivation to attend:
Knowledge
Network
Other(please mention)
Good question!
I think it all depends.
I've often discovered valuable info not only at the talks but at the breaks -- in the hallways, over dinner. Sometimes those discussions can bring a valuable piece of knowledge I've been seeking for a while that I can't seem to get online or in print.
Agree but the time commitment it needs, ROI becomes quite questionable at times. Just follow up questions: How frequently you attend meetups/events? Would you prefer to try a virtual meetup for events you can't be part of but are imp?
You're so right about the ROI. I only go to events that a high number of my prospective clients attend.
For example, I was invited to a networking event last night that 200+ people were attending. But these were all kinds of people -- some of them not even in business. I chose not to attend.
However, the morning before, I took 3 hours to attend an event held in a co-working space where the majority of attendees are in SaaS. That was worth my time. I made 2 solid connections at that event.
At different times in your business, your criteria to evaluate will be different. But in startup, only attend those events where there's a high concentration of potential customers.
Save the broader networking events for branding later on once you've got good traction. 👍
