How Reviews Drive Results on ChatGPT Shopping & AI Visibility

In a Wired interview about the launch of ChatGPT's shopping features, search product lead Adam Fry dropped this nugget: "The product recommendations shown to prospective shoppers are based on what ChatGPT remembers about a user’s preferences as well as product reviews pulled from across the web." ... “It's trying to understand how people are reviewing this, how people are talking about this, what the pros and cons are.”

This should light a fire under e-commerce operators to pay special attention to their pages on review sites. Because while many do a nice job collecting reviews, they do so by focusing on one (Google, their own sites) over others (TrustPilot, industry review sites).

Services like Reviews.Shop exist to balance those scales, copying and pasting reviews from one platform to another.

This is especially important since you cannot be certain which review sites will be scraped by specific LLM. For example, do we know if Google will allow OpenAI to scrape its reviews product?

Time to dig in.

Even if you think AI shopping isn't going anywhere, it will pay dividends: giving those review sites some extra TLC will help you with traditional search, too.

    Showing up in AI answers is a whole different game. Been using Search Party. It basically checks if your products even show up in places like ChatGPT, and if not, it auto-fixes that by sending little agents to get you visibility.

    Hi OP, @aly4xx & @NextEraDigital007 I’m working on a tool right now to help smaller shops not only get their products showing up in ChatGPT and Perplexity, etc,, but also make it easier for buyers to actually complete the purchase once they find them (no friction).

    It feels like all the visibility tricks (schema, reviews, GTINs) are becoming table stakes, but there’s still this huge gap between showing up in AI answers and getting the sale.

    If anyone here is curious, I’m happy to share what I’ve been testing and would love to swap notes or see if you’d want early access to try it out.

    I run a small Shopify store and recently I’ve been noticing a dip in organic traffic. I’m starting to wonder if it’s because more people are using tools like Chatgpt or Perplexity to search for products, instead of just google or social.

    I tried asking Chatgpt about products like mine — and it mostly suggested big brands or sites with huge content libraries. Got me thinking: maybe this is becoming a visibility issue for smaller stores like mine?

    So I'm curious, have you ever tried looking up your products or brand in ChatGPT or Perplexity? and what came up? Was it accurate? Did it even show up?

    Also wondering:

    How do you usually figure out where your customers are coming from?

    Have you noticed any changes in where traffic is coming from lately?

    What’s been the hardest part about getting your brand discovered online?
