In my newsletter Fake Mayo I share weekly stories (interviews) of how founders got their first customers.
This story is about Michael Sumner and his project ScoreDetect, a platform that leverages blockchain technology to prove ownership of digital files and text.
ScoreDetect enables individuals and businesses to protect their digital content with verification certificates across various formats—intellectual property, social media posts, images, videos, music, and more.
After seven months of research, the platform pivoted from an AI detection tool to intellectual property protection, keeping the ScoreDetect brand while expanding its capabilities.
Launched in October 2023, ScoreDetect integrated with Zapier and SKALE blockchain, offering protection features without storing actual assets. Its SaaS model includes subscription options and bespoke solutions for enterprises, serving over 40,000 users by September 2024.
Marketing ScoreDetect has been largely organic, with a focus on SEO and content tailored to the ideal customer profile. This blog-centric strategy built steady traction, attracting users without relying on paid ads or social media. Efforts on X were minimal, as the blog generated substantial traffic.
The primary marketing challenge was honing messaging amid similar tools, with an emphasis on creating a trusted, stable brand rather than chasing trends.
