How should founders approach problems in new territory?

I just read an old article about how Uber, Airbnb, Etsy and the likes approach the problem of growing their startup. Reading this, I can't help but think that most of these founders were building a company for the first time, hence the problem of growing their startup is something they were encountering for the first time.

How do you think these founders eventually find solution to these problems? Is it intelligence or more of a trial and error?

Just my 2 cents...I don't want to get "general principles" not lessons from the exceptions, rather from the rules (IndieHackers interviews).

Okay, so Uber/Lyft created ride-sharing companies...who else? Who else replicated that model to that success? What about Etsy? Was there anyone who got to that scale? Asking a question like these can help you find dangerous advice that's hard to replicate.
