How should one decide on what TLD's to use?

Just woke up with a new idea with a catchy domain name however the TLD is .app. Its .com name isn't available and Google Search results show the content in an unrelated space.

Should i consider changing the name or should i keep the .app and work on SEO ?

The internet says any TLD is fine but all founders recommend going with a .com as much as possible.

Thanks for the reply @upenv ! I thought so too. Let me try brainstorm for alternate name ideas and if they don't click just revert to the .app domain/

Sometimes you get lucky too. I got ZeroToFounder.co a few months before and the one who owns the .com domain reached out to me to sell the .com and I closed the .com deal for a small amount.

    Hi David,
although I agree that .com domain is more common I wouldn't rule out .app yet.
It's not that uncommon and it might fit your idea better.
Of course I can't judge that as you didn't give any hint what your idea is about. 😉

If your idea is good, I am sure customers will not care about the domain.

I agree with others that the name should not be too complex.

Thank you for your response ! I thought of calling the project "[PROJECT NAME].app" so its more catchy to many people as a start. I guess that would make it easier for customers to remember it don't you think ?

If [Project Name] makes some sense, then I agree.
And if it is related to what the app does, even better!

It's old school but .com is pretty much a must have even today

Common wisdom is to go with a .сom at all times. People are more used to these kinds of domains and they're just more common. I personally think it doesn't really matter so long as your domain is:

    1. Easy for customers to remember
    2. Not long or overly complex

If you're set on using a .сom, you can always do something like adding "use" or "get" before the name of your product (many startups do this). For example:

    mycoolproduct.сom → getmycoolproduct.сom

Great idea @businessing1 ! Will try that. Although the name is 4 letters so not sure how memorable it will be with the "use" or "get"
