Thank you for this article. Interestingly, you're talking about figuring out who to hire, but not about figuring out the identity of the company first. In my experience, a person who fits the company's identity but lacks skills will produce better outcomes and less damage, than hiring someone who has the skills but doesn't fit into the company. And you will need fewer people if they fit the company's identity because each person's output is so much higher. What are your thoughts and experiences with that?

Finding the right cultural fit is important too, you're absolutely right @mDanz!

If a candidate doesn't click with the company's vision, mission, etc., then it'll be hard to work in a well-tuned team. You need to have a good match in terms of vibe as well (e.g., enthusiasm, speed, etc.). So, yes, finding the right people is really hard, as so much has to be taken into consideration (from experience and knowledge to soft skills and vibe match and so on). I'm not sure if this could compensate for the number of people you need onboard, though, but I do agree that it helps people stay on the same page and get things done faster.

I stopped hiring for experience or skills completely, due to the importance of culture fit. :D And the best results came from people just finishing university. In my experience, I prefer someone I can shape and mold, over someone who is already burned by the traditional way of doing business.
