How successful has your guest posting strategy been?

So I'm writing this post because I personally have had mixed results from guest posting over the years. I feel like it can be a bit hit and miss. But when it works, it really works. A few things I've noticed:

-It doesn't necessarily follow that the bigger the influencer the bigger the shares/new followers
-'Newsjacking' guest posts (articles written around a news hook) on average DA (Domain Authority) sites tend to be more successful than evergreen (non time-sensitive) pieces on high DA sites
-If you're mainly guest posting for backlinks, check the link to the site you're writing for is 'follow' rather than 'nofollow' (most major publications are nofollow but still worth writing for them due to audience numbers!)
