This is one of the questions or things that people ask when you tell them about your app or idea that sort of ticks me off; "X app does the exact same thing, how's yours any better or different".
I particularly don't like it cause I believe competition and differentiation aren't really that much of a problem, it's more of a preference thing i.e. For every number of people that prefer Uber you'd find an equal number that prefers Lyft or Bolt or Careem, it's not about whose better.
So I wanna know the best way to go by this question, especially in my case, I'm creating a virtual debit card issuing app for Africa, it's not nascent, we have a lot of competitors and other apps that have the same feature, but for us, we believe that it can be more than just a feature, we want to go in-depth on offering services around the debit card and eventually credit; this is at least what I tell people if they ask the question.
What do you think?
And again, how do you go by answering the question?
Best way?
Get them to try it!
To see, feel, and smell why it's better.
Maybe they can start with a small pilot test.
Once they use it, they'll know, you'll know.
You win either way.
You got a customer.
Or you know why you lost a customer... learn from it, fold it in, and get better.
I have built multiple products and also founder of Micro SaaS HQ. I faced this question a few times in open forums.
Most IHers could relate to your question and must have faced this question at least once.
Sometime to make it more dignified in open forums, you can't just skip answering the question and you are bound to give some answer.
Here are some options to safely answer.
It seems like you answered your own question. This being said, customer preference always has a deeper reasoning which can be psychological (safety, trust) or practical (pricing, ease of use). When marketing a product or a service that's very similar in features to others, you should take these factors into account and see them as potential differentiators.
The only way to know the answer to this is to ask the users who have switched from your competitors to you.
Anything else is just bullshit.
I would take it like they are trying to do you a favor. When they ask you that question they are being "devils advocate". Your job isn't to convince them its to use it as an opportunity, more time to think about your product with the help of another person. In fact once you bring up a few things that are different, they will rebuttal, and that is where the money is. Access to a different tree of thinking.
This is actually a pretty interesting, different dimensional way of looking at it. Thanks for the insight
Because it's more faster, more robust, and easier to understand.
It can be a bit annoying when people ask how your app is different from existing competitors. However, it's important to remember that this is a valid question, as it helps potential users and investors understand how your app stands out in a crowded market.
One way to approach answering this question is to focus on the specific problem or pain point that your app is solving that other similar apps may not be addressing. For example, you could emphasize the specific services and features that you're offering around the debit card that your competitors may not have, such as additional financial management tools, more convenient methods of loading funds, or more robust security features.
I'd like to go with "Use it and you will know it"
You can point out your USPs, point out the ease of use, pricing, maybe the niche, and many more.
Even a tool that dies things exactly as the old tool, with better UX has my money. So the best bet is just to make them try it.
Another way is that if you are new to this market and have great deals and offers mostly similar that doesn't matter if you seem more trustable to your customer, people will take your service rather than going for the prior one. I know one platform which gives you all the solutions, the platform is called AppsHive. AppsHive is the leading platform to promote your app in different categories along with specific countries and professions and you can also add deals and offers for your app on this platform.
Here is the platform: https://www.appshive.co/
May it helps you for better reach.
Describe the unique problem you are solving. There will always be alternatives. Your product has a specific reason for being - just focus on that.
Two ways:
(For me, most solopreneur education programs dump knowledge on the students. If it's incorrect knowledge it doesn't help them. But even if it's good, it still doesn't help them cuz those people either won't consume the info or they'll consume it but they won't use it. So my program has hand-holding as a big selling point. From live sessions to office hours and a 24/7 community.
But as you can see, it has to be legit differentiation. It can't be BS. Some evidence-based marketers will claim that differentiation is bullshit. That's not entirely true. While there's truth to the claim that differentiation has been overhyped, it's not completely useless. But again, it's REAL differentiation that matters.
(This essay will help you understand this brand association better.)
You're not in the convincing business.
You're in the market segmentation, target, and positioning business.
Don't forget you're a solopreneur and not a fortune 500. You do not need to appeal to the entire market because you're not trying to get 70% market/unit/profit share.
You're simply trying to make enough to make a comfortable living.
A few ways to think about this is to:
While true, customer preferences are dependent on some differentiation from the competition unless you're just early to the market.
