How to be an awesome community member
The challenge of open and free communities is real. I strive to create the best space possible, but it's hard when people come in without the same understanding or mindset.
So, I thought I'd write down some ideas about what makes a great community member, in general, but written thinking about Indie Hackers.
- Introduce yourself: find a good place to say hello and talk about the things you are into.
- Lurk first: get a feel for the conversations that are happening
- Look for posts that work: what are the best posts? Why are they the best? Adapt your posts so that they resonate with the community.
- Dip your toes in: refrain from being selfish. Focus on giving and helping. A community is not about you, it's about us.
- Comment before starting a post: start contributing by commenting. It's less scary and it gives you a real chance to contribute.
- Imagine the community is an IRL party: behave in a human way, get to know people, and help people out. Don't behave in a way that would normally get you kicked out of a party.
- Impact takes time: good things come to those who wait, help and invest their time.

It took me months to learn how Indie Hackers worked (lurked), then I slowly started commenting (Dip your toes in). After I felt comfortable doing that I started posting.
I have got amazing results from IHs, but I never really did it for the results.

I'm new to this community but I'm already amazed by the way people behave in here and how constructive discussions are.
That list is great and I think most people here already follow many of those ideas!
Great list! Giving and helping is THE fastest way to get value from Indie Hackers in my opinion. Often overlooked by many new users I think.
I would also add just being nice and constructive. Everyone here is at different points in their life and entrepreneurship is a VERY personal journey that's different for everyone. Being nice and constructive to each other makes it easier to ride this wave out :)

I'd add looking around the site a bit to get familiar with how it works, its tools, and resources.
