How to Become a UI/UX Designer

Hey IH,

A friend of mine asked me yesterday if I could help out her brother-in-law, who was looking to become a professional UX designer and work at startups. He asked me 8-10 detailed questions and explained he'd already built a basic web app using JavaScript.

He mostly wanted to know about where to go from there. What should he do next?

Here's some of the questions he asked:

  • What makes an awesome freelance developer?
  • What design concepts are important?
  • When should I start building prototypes?
  • Which skills should I learn? Should I learn React?

Since I've been studying web development and working at startups for more than a decade, I decided to put together everything I knew into one compact video.

I thought some of you might enjoy it too — or have feedback for me about other tools/resources/practices I should implement myself.

Udacity is offering free one nanodegree for a month if you live in US or Europe if not you can always use VPN and avail the offer and you'd still have access to the course. They also have UX Designer nanodegree. Or, you could suggest him to learn from hackdesign.org and it'd answer most of his answers.
