How to build in public?

Hey IH fam,

I'm currently building a startup - Wanda AI - and have been considering documenting the journey.

The goal is to share with others what we're building, to get traction by creating content consistently, and start building a small community of potential users.

Question: how to start and what to write about?

All we have right now is a working MVP and only 1 user.

We are shipping new features every 2 weeks.

What type of content can we write about, and does it look like to "build in public" or "document your journey"?

    I've been wondering the same for a projects I'm working on like https://dayquest.carrd.co/ (a gamified productivity community)

    When I started doing research I found an epic guide here: https://publiclab.co/building-in-public

    After finding that guide I decided to find a few reference accounts. To do this I recommend going to ProductHunt and finding competitors who have had a successful launches and seeing how they promoted their product in the early days.

    Once you have competitor reference you'll know what channels to post on then you share your content on those channels or newer channels like those channels (like Twitter vs Mastodon). The goal is that your build in public personable content and your product's positioning should help you build an audience or at least get feedback which will help you build an audience over time.

    By doing this I've gotten nearly 20 signups over the last week. Here's a few examples:

    Great idea, i have been thinking of doing this myself.

    If i were to document my journey, i would probably give updates about my product, share a roadmap or some testers case studies.
    I guess the main idea would be to get traction around what i am doing.

    When it comes to building in public, I believe one of the best examples is Pat Walls with is Starter Story business.

    The case studies bring enormous value and inspiration for anyone like you Bernie that is on the journey to build something of value and wants to get inspiration on ideas, strategies and journey to get there.

    From the people I follow building in public, the most successful thing is authenticity. The more real you are with the wins and the failures the more people engage.

    I look forwards to seeing what Wanda AI becomes.

    It depends, if your audience is primarily developers than you publish content about how you developed something, what problems you faced and how you overcame it.
    If your audience is primarily other indiehackers than you create posts about your goals in terms of users acquired, revenue generated, channels used for acquiring them etc.

    In short you need to create content according to the audience you plan to attract. I am not building in public but as part of my content strategy(not sure if it should even be called that). I will be blogging about all the features that my app provides and how it benefits the user with different case studies. In fact that should be the first step before creating mvp however we just get too excited about the product and do marketing after product creation.

    You try and roll out an ideas board. You could create simple road map of the features you would like to roll out and add a voting system.

    This way your users are engaging in the idea, but also completing that very valuable feed back loop along the way.

    I'm also new in build in public thing. But It's better to start somehow. I started to do that on Twitter. And once I started to do that, it made me feel better. I don't have a lot of follower yet, yes. I just want to document the journey. It does not matter to have a lot of followers right now. Since I'm working on a app to make learning new English word easier, it might be hard to reach my target audience by keep tweeting in English :D As I said, I don't care about it. I'm just documenting what I'm doing recently.

      I have exactly the same mindset! It is important to simply start somewhere, and there is no pressure to have followers as for now it is purely to document things and share lessons from the journey.

    In terms of topics I suggest covering difficult team and product issues and also what you do for marketing. This will likely cover most important things most of us would love to know about!

    Start with twitter, there are lot of people building in public. Even I post updates about my product regularly.

    I wish it had been Wakanda AI than Wanda AI!

      Hahahahah we thought about Wakanda AI tbh but Wanda AI is better for the "Wand" side of things, it helps us to come up with better storytelling hehehe
